re: “Nick basically got the job by default,” Dean said. “We didn’t have a leading candidate.”

This story annoys me. The Michigan State HC is that candidate my dad and I wanted. He wasn’t an assistant, he was an over-achieving HC who wanted to move up to the SEC. We were pumped when he got the job and everyone loved him after his first interview.

I remember Emmert wanted him, and after the Jon Gruden rumors died down, I don’t think there was anyone who was highly coveted by the fanbase.
I think people were generally okay with the hire but not expecting greatness.

Jesus, the Grumors go back that far??

The rumor I remember hearing was that they met at a Taco Bell about 10 miles from campus to be under the radar.
That never made any sense but I have no doubt that Emmert called around and Gruden picked up to get some leverage/

Two days before we hired Saban a rumor went around that Steve Spurrier was on a plane to Tuscaloosa and would be announced that night. In a way rumors were even wilder back then- now that I've seen so many dumb ones I don't believe anything

Joe Dean did not hire that coach
Mark Emmert did
And they agreed to pay him $1 million after sitting in an interview with him when no other school had a coach making over a million.
Alleva was one disaster after another
His first big hire was Trent Johnson who has no personality and didn't want to play the recruiting games of the times
Then he caved and hired Johnny Jones which was a disaster only saved when Eric Musselman was an assistant and did all the coaching
Then he brings in Wade who was Eddie Nunez's hire and still may put the program on probation
He retained Miles from Skip Bertman and for all purposes Miles seemed like the opposite of Saban personality wise until the major coverup and two idiots in Alleva and F King should have pulled the plug immediately when they found out about uncomfortable situations with students and Alleva even backed Miles when he should have been fired after the A&M game in 2015
Then he refused to have a real search to replace him and ended up with O who I said at the time would have about a 5 year life.
Well, here we are in 2021 and it looks like he has about a year or two left depending on if LSU is willing to pay the buyout!
