SS- Arnold

What makes you think Arnold is ready to start at SS let alone any position as a freshman?

I would absolutely not start Hughes simply because Doughty is inexperienced. If Hughes has a GREAT fall and Doughty has a TERRIBLE fall, I could see the angle. Otherwise, Doughty needs to be in the lineup from jump.

I think Doughty could capably play SS given enough practice there. Right now though Hughes glove is better there than any of the potential candidates.

I’ll take a flyer on Doughty’s defense given his offensive production eats Hal’s for breakfast

It still amazes me of all the talent in the baseball land we wind up with a starting infielder at the mighty LSU batting less than his weight and don't give me cause of his fielding ,dude can't even bunt

I believe Cairo would have been the starting SS, but he chose pro ball. Arnold and Mathis were signed to replace Cairo. 2B, 3B and SS are all speculation at this point but I don't believe we have a lot of gloves that can play SS at SEC level. Cairo signing left us with a big hole. Hughes can handle SS and I'm glad we have him. Hughes has saved our bacon in the past and could well again in the future. Hughes chose to be a Tiger, is a Tiger and as a Tiger fan I support him. He is a nice safety net to have. However if one of the newcomers(Cranford, Doughty, Mathis, Arnold) are capable defensively and bring a bigger bat that will be our best option.

I seriously have no confidence in Paul anymore. We arent going to win anything of significance until he leaves. He's a damn liability now, much like les was with football. He has to go. This will be his last year. Mark it down, bookmark it, down vote it, idgaf. You know I'm right and this team won't accomplish anything and probably won't get out of a super regional. It's bullshite.

Mainieri has probably become complacent. Putting in less hours, hiring for comfort and loyalty rather than talent. It is human nature. Bringing in someone new could bring some energy, excitement. Perhaps they will be better at recruiting and could double has a position coach. They will certainly have new philosophies and approaches to the game, which might be good or bad. All that being said, Mainieri is still a top level coach and you will not hire a better resume' or hire someone with more experience. One thing to keep in mind. This is not the new AD's hire. Woodward might decide to go in a different direction. That would be a big gamble and he would have to make a A+ hire for that to work. The safer thing for Wooodward to do, would be to stay with the quality Coach and let Mainieri decide when he wants to hang it up. Mainieri has a loyal personality and I can see him wanting to spend more time with his family at some point. Woodward doesn't come across as a guy that always plays it safe, so who knows. The reality is we can not even speculate until the year is over. We will not know if this teams has met expectations until the season is over. That would be the best time to talk about if we need a new coach.

Seriously? His last title was in 2009 dude. He made another but got his ads whipped and hasn't even sniffed Omaha since. Hell, I would say we were even lucky to make a super last season and lost to a Florida st team that wasn't very good. Our program is sliding, whether you realize it or not. We need a change. Let's see how you feel after this team is worse than last years, bc it's gonna happen. You are willing to let the program continue to slide when everyone else in the conference wins titles and goes up...I'm not. Woodward will fire him if we don't at least make Omaha this season and he should. Btw, we aren't gonna make Omaha this season.

I'm feeling very optimistic about 2020. We have a talented, very deep and experienced pitching. We have more power bats than we have had in a long time. We have a hitting Coach that could have a major impact.I wouldn't want to play against us. We need Hill, Marceaux and Henry to stay relatively healthy and we will be fine.

If these two are in the lineup together, I think their positions would be swapped.

I could see a scenario where Doughty starts at SS and then slides over to third late in the game when Hughes is brought in for defense. At least until we're more comfortable with Doughty's defense at short.

Dugas has been playing 3rd almost exclusively since getting to the Prospect League. I don't know if that was planned, or just how their roster worked out though.

Willis will play a lot somewhere. After reading the article in the Advocate about what the new hitting coach is trying to do, it looks a lot like the summer Willis put together in the Northwoods league. A lot of walks, a lot of XBHs.

Hampton will need time to adjust, so I don't see him in the opening day line up. There will be idiots wondering why he was so highly thought of as a prospect at points this season. He's still raw.

I agree with Les above. Too many on this site are drinking the cool aid. At best, LSU is the 4th o4 5th best program in the SEC. I will give Paul credit for hiring Smith....some of that may be looking over his shoulder re a new AD.
He & us are expecting 4 injured pitchers to come back. It didn't happen last year w/Gilbert & Hillard. It just don't work that way.
You have no idea how much I hope I am wrong, but I do believe that the game has passed CPM by & he needs to "retire"

Don't forget if Hughes feels slighted in any way, he could always bolt and go play for his dad at KSU

PM has been a very successful coach and has earned right to go out on own terms. It's a lot harder to win national title this decade than it's ever been. For the most part he always has LSU in a position to compete in NCAA tournament play which is not a given anymore.

PM is not really a pitching coach or a hitting coach but he delegates those responsibilities while overseeing all facets of program. That arrangement is kind of odd in that most head coaches seem to lean to either strong pitching background or hitting background. I think PM is good at identifying talent and for the most part makes decent assistant hires. If something is broke, he does tend to fix it. Pitching under Grewe was a disaster but he fixed it with Dunn. Hitting under Javi and Ochinko was not up to par but he did bring in Cannizaro and his departure timing didn't help in finding a replacement. I do like the Eddie Smith hire.

I don’t see losing a consistent .174 hitter as an issue. See ya.

I don't see him leaving, but his brother is now an assistant at Morehead State under former Notre Dame coach Mik Aoki. Aoki was at Boston College before Notre Dame and was on Pete Hughes' staff at BC before succeeding him as the HC there.
