after the first 7 picks or so, the "1st round" designation isn't a big deal

and nevis is a 1st rounder?

the first 16 picks can get 6 year deals, the next 16 picks get 5 year deals

i can see nevis pulling out of the senior bowl for 2 reasons

1. bad advice. happens all the time

2. weight. he may not be bigger than 285 right now, and he'll need to be 290+ at the least. they do heights/weights at the SB, so maybe he's trying to pack on weight before the combine

i hope he's big enough, but if 2 is the situation, he's being smart. if he's big enough, the SB is where he would get a ton of buzz. pulling out gets a red flag by your name and he loses a chance to shine in practices

unless you're getting those massive super early deals, i'd say getting a 5-year deal is better for the player

hit FA sooner to get your big 2nd contract

Would a great performance in the senior bowl push him past nick fairley and push him into a top 7 pick? Very unlikely...that game is for sleeper players who did not get much recognition, but may be worth a late round pic. And, the playing scheme's are limited and the players havent played together, ever. So an amazing performance that would pick up his stock is unlikely. I agree with his decision.

Also he may feel that there is enough really good game film of him against top competition already and doesn't want to risk injury/bad showing.

Just a thought.

no it's not. that's for the lesser post-season "bowls" like the east-west shrine game

nobody in the NFL really cares about the game. it's all about the week of practice

i don't think many players get seriously injured at the senior bowl. i can't remember any off the top of my head (i'm sure there are some examples)

fearing risking a bad showing is showing fear, which is why guys get red flags for skipping the SB

the advocate sucks, but does anybody know if nevis has reported a fake injury? usually that's how guys opt out

Look I'm just saying that Nevis has A LOT of film of him going against high quality opponents. IMO a lot moreso than someone who plays for even some major BCS schools.

Also, I think that he feels getting his body ready is of higher importance than playing in the SB.

Dumb move.

In 40 yrs, I have never seen anyone do anything but help themselves by playing in the Senior Bowl. Its not like other allstar games. The NFL teams and coaches are all over it.

In fact its known around the NFL as "The NFL Coaches Convention".
