He wasn’t. Look at the stats.

56.3 completion %
6.7 yards/attempt
21-11 TD-INT
125.8 rating

For reference, Brandon Harris in 2015:
53.8 completion %
7.8 yards/attempt
13-6 TD-INT
130.6 rating

I know people have nostalgia over Flynn and the 2007 team, but the objective stats equivocally say he wasn’t very good. Sorry.

On AVERAGE it has been mediocre or slightly below.

Great:
Jamarcus Russel
Mettenberger

Good:
Flynn

Average:
Etling

Bad:
JJ
J Lee
Harris

Awful:
Jennings

So one season above average in a decade.

It's talked about all the time. It was the reason Yella Teeth was on the hot seat.

Tennessee?

It does and Dobbs shits on our recent QB play.

labama hasn’t had a qb that is better than Mett in 20 years... maybe a Flynn level guy like McCarron.

But they win titles anyway so who cares.

Lee was only bad as a freshman because he got thrown to the wolves to soon. He was solid as a senior and had a lot to do with that dominant season.

21 TDs to 11 INTs is not bad at all, at least not by LSU standards. He also ran for 4 TDs and used his legs to pick up key first downs frequently.

He was clutch as hell in the Florida, Auburn, and Bama wins, and played maybe his best game against Arkansas.

And he fricking lit OSU up in the BCSNCG.

He was a weapon at the position, not a liability. We used him to attack, not just out of desperation. He threw the ball over 350 time’s showing that he was a major part of the game plan at all times.

He was a good LSU QB.

Going over stats now and damn I feel bad putting Etling in the average category.

Throwing 27 TDs and only 7 picks in less than two years as a starter is not bad at all. I know he missed some big play opportunities but I honestly think he could have been a Flynn/Mauck type guy if we had committed to him going into 2016.

Of all of Miles’ regrets, that one probably cost him his job.

I think we get the W at Lambeau if Etling starts that game, and who knows beyond that

It’s not even 2-1, that’s not good. You’re right though, by LSU standards it’s ok.

He was bad against Florida and Arkansas. Ok against Alabama, did have 3 picks though. Very good against Auburn.

He was good in that game.

In my opinion, because he had the best team in the country around him. Put him on 2015 LSU and we view him like we do Brandon Harris

Great:
Jamarcus Russel
Russell was not great. He wasn't even very good. He was very inconsistent and rarely showed up for good opponents. fans do not remember what he really was. He was a bad decision maker and was constantly getting stuck between should he run or not run. He looked great against a crappy, overrated ND team, and for that everyone remembers him being "great". He was not great. If he was great, how do you actually describe great players like Newton, Deshaun, Manning, Tebown, etc?

Mett was great, but he was horribly managed or more accurately, the offense was horribly managed. Les truly ran 1 and 10 up the middle, 2nd and 10 up the middle. Desperation 3rd and Long time after time. Mett and Jarvis/Odell were just amazing at converting 3rd and longs. Many people remember being that team being the best at 3rd down conversion, but most prob forget so many were 3rd and 6 or more.

Uh, generational players? Some of the best college QBs ever?

To make it clearer. Nick Saban was the head coach at LSU the last time we hit on a QB recruit out of high school.

Lee gets a bad wrap for the 2008 season. However, he bailed us out a ton with his arm in 2010. Then in 2011, he was solid until the Bama game.

2009 Jefferson: 67th
2008 Lee: 85th

LSU has had ONE season in the last decade in which its starting QB cracked the top fifty for total yards. Name another “top 25” program that has that type of futility over the last decade.

What about these two greats? These two should be in the great section without argument.

ETA : I’ll even throw ol’ Herb up in there, that was close enough to that 20 years we’re talking about.
Not great, but good enough. Beat the beast in ‘97, so he counts for me.

Jamarcus was overrated. He had 4 future NFL receivers to throw the ball to, 2 of which were 1st round draft choices. He laid an egg in the big games against Auburn and Florida, which cost us a national title.

His true colors came out in the NFL when he played for the Raiders.

I think the “Bad QB play” at LSU talking point is starting to reach myth status

I actually agree with this...even when we have a good quarterback, we talk ourselves out of it so that we have something to gripe about.

fact is, we have been a damn strong running team in the past and that took away the opportunity for quarterbacks to pad statistics. As I see it, most quarterbacks that I can remember have been at least serviceable and frankly, we won a hell of a lot of games because of them.

Now the tables have turned and we are looking for quarterbacks that we can showcase, but that certainly doesn't mean that we didn't have a quarterback every year or two that was decent.

Outside of 1/9, yes, JJ was a mediocre, not bad, QB for LSU.
Even 1-9-12 he completed 65% of passes called.....under serious pressure.

Matt Flyn 2007 13gm
202 *359 *56.3 *2407 *6.7 *6.5 *21 *11 *125.8

Jordan Jefferson 2009 12gm
182 *296 *61.5 *2166 *7.3 *7.4 *17 *7 *137.2
2009 featured historically bad OL blocking and no run game to slow the pass rush.
One can only speculate how Flynn would've done in '09, but I doubt it would've been spectacular considering above stats.

Not knighting for JJ, just clearing the waters.
