NBC story on Tyrus Thomas and Garrett Temple

Loved that team
quote:
When Temple signed his three-year, $24 million deal with the Kings in July 2016 after enduring eight 10-day contracts to grind out his place in the league, Thomas called him, crying.
“He was like, ‘Man, why are you crying?’ And it was because I was so happy for him,” Thomas said. “Unlike a lot of the guys in the NBA, including myself, he actually has family and the foundation where he’s not the savior for the family. He understands a lot more than we did. He always was more advanced just in the sense of rationale and logic as opposed to guys like me and Glen who grew up in survive mode and we’d sometimes be irrational.

I.e. Temple could grind it out for years for (relatively) low pay and wasn't compelled to fund the lifestyles of every hanger-on and broke dick family member that used Thomas and Davis as their personal piggy banks.
Admittedly, it is as lifestyle I don't know. But it is probably tough for an immature 19, 20, 21 year old who came from a very modest to (some) outright impoverished backgrounds to all of a sudden have millions of dollars and seemingly EVERYONE in the community not being unselfishly happy for the kid's success, but coming around with their hand out acting as if the kid essentially owes the "community" his hard earned money.
Very few 19-22 year olds (myself included at that age) have a real concept of sound financial practices. But the more money you have...the more of your money other people want. The perfect storm to quickly blow would should be enough money to live comfortably for the rest of your life

Very cool. Yes I followed that team all the way to Indianapolis and every step along the way that year. Some great talent took the floor every night for us. Brady had his hands full with that group.

It's amazing what having good parents does for a family for the generations following.

Temple was only with the Memphis Grizzlies for a few months two seasons ago, but everyone in the organization raved about the kind of vet leader, positive locker room presence, and just overall person he was. He has a pretty stellar rep across the league.
I wonder if coaching could be in his ultimate future. I could absolutely see him being a good one.

There's a reason, even before he was a big contributor on the court, that he was on the NBAPA committee with people like Lebron James and Chris Paul.
He's a extremely well-respected. I read some quotes a while back that I'll try to find, but it was his peers in the league saying they think he'll represent the players even after he quits because they all want him to.

Their whole recruiting class was from within a half mile of campus.
You would think Brady would have parlayed that into working on the next class and bringing in a dynamite follow up to such good fortune.
Nah.

Loved that team too. What is the name of the UCLA guard who finally beat us?

Well they had a couple but Jordan Farmar.

I was going to say fricky Mcfrickface, but yeah, his birth name is Jordan.
I'm still very salty about that game.

Did Thomas spend all of his earnings?

Temple has been in the league longer than anyone from that era
He’s made a good chunk of change in the nba, funny how he was kind of the after thought

Temple and I were in the same major. Dude has a great head on his shoulders and was a very good classmate.
Big Baby on the other hand....I had him in a CMST class. 7:30Am class, dude would roll in at 8:15 stopping to say "Good Morning" to every girl in the class including the instructor.
Tyrus used to play pick up BB at the UREC during his red shirt year. Dude dunked on me in a pick up game

Such a great story and not surprising. If you all know what kind of man Garrett and Collis III's dad is, you'd know why his sons are the men they are. GREAT ROLE MODEL.

His time at LSU showed he could defend and he has a decent level of athleticism. He's kind of the poster child for making a long, lucrative career of simply accepting his role on a team and performing that role to the best of his ability. Even at LSU he was NEVER the primary scoring option. He wasn't a big play maker. He just did his job and was consistent in doing it. Coaches/GM's want exceptional talent. But they also want guys they can trust night in and night out. Temple has been that guy. You're rarely going to get a huge night from him...but you're rarely going to get a bad night either

Cool story of the brotherhood of LSU hoops players. Love hearing that kind of shite.
We've had so many legit good guys on the basketball team over the decades.

I always hear that he's at the top of the list to be the future head of the player's association. He's currently a VP among the active players executive committee

When I was a senior in high school we played U-High.
Garret Tenple was in eighth grade.
I guarded him all game and held him scoreless.
Nothing to brag about being I was 5 years older at the time and he was a late bloomer, but it’s still fun to say I held an NBA player scoreless lol
Kudos to Garrett for making it this long in the NBA while garnering so much respect from his peers.
