Maybe because of the way the conference tried to force it on us?

I think that's a huge part of it. I was born in the mid 70's so I missed the true heyday of the LSU-Ole Miss hatred but my father insist there has never been a more intense rivalry anywhere in the nation then between these two teams that existed for decades.

I don't think we'll ever achieve or see that type of passion with the Hogs. Our best bet is to hope Ole Miss out recruits State and USM and returns to some semblance of their former glory for LSU to have a true rival again.

The shame about Tulane is that it was LSU's unquestioned rival. That is one thing missing from LSU is an unquestioned, regardless of the records rivalry game.

I like the idea of Arkansas being that with LSU but don't think it'll happen or it will take a long time, but I like the idea of it. I do wish Tulane and LSU would play every year. When I was at LSU in the 90s the rivalry was dying out.

Lotta people here want a rival. I guess rivals make football fun. I think not having a traditional rival helps lsu. Rivals typically always play you close, despite how good their team is and therefore are always a potential loss. Rivals typically get up for your game even if they are having a bad year and especially if they can play spoiler to your good year. Rivals also usually fight for the same recruits. I believe that the rise of LSU can be directly related to the utter destruction of Tulane and the general incompetence of Ole Miss. Our rivals fell off and we enjoy success. Look at OSU VS MICH for another example of the same thing.

Historically, Ole Miss. And that's really the only one.

More recent history it's Auburn and Alabama because of the Western Division competition.

But I put Florida up there too because it's an annual event, and both fan bases really seem to hate each other.

I actually think OSU and UM help both schools gain national attention. One reason you can argue that Michigan is such a great program is that they have three rivalry games in Ohio State, Michigan State and Notre Dame and a notch below is the little brown jug game with Minnesota.

OSU and ND are always big games nationally and if MSU is having a good year it becomes a big game nationally, but it's always a big game instate. Having multiple rivals means you're a big time program.

Heck Ohio State and Penn State is becoming a big national game as well.

I agree that big rivalry games can promote your image and strengthen your program, like UM and OSU. This mostly from media hype and increased viewership. But I dont think this requires a true rival. Look at the hype surrounding our games with UF in the last few years, they got plenty of exposure, not because we are rivals, but because it was a game of national consequence. Another example is Bama, as a result of Nick Saban, it captures the nation's interest.
Why do we need a rival in Arkansas if we can create the interest in the above mentioned games? Arkansas needs us as a rival way more than we need them.

When I got to LSU, it was in this order, interestingly:

Ole Miss
Tulane
Texas A&M (aka eATMe)

LSU does not have a traditional college football rival anymore because Tulane thought they were too good for the SEC. Wonder how they feel now about leaving the SEC.

I don't view Florida as a rival. Important game every year for certain but its clearly not a rivalry game. Neither is Bama or Arky. Rivalry games supersede records and importance.

Ole Miss is our rival. Let the Rebels start to capture the Mississippi talent like they once did and the younger posters will have an opportunity to experience one of the great rivalries in SEC history.

Perhaps if you looked at the definition of RIVAL, you would view it differently.

One who attempts to equal or surpass another, or who pursues the same object as another; a competitor.

One that equals or almost equals another in a particular respect.

Do you think Ole Miss is the school that LSU tries to equal, emulate or attempts to surpass? I think Bama and UF are the schools we compete with for SEC and national championships every year....and the Arkansas series has been as difficult for LSU as any other in the past 13 years. While we are 8-3 (.728) vs. Bama since 2000 and 5-4 (.555) vs. UF since 2001 We are 7-6 (.538) vs. Arky since 1998.

I just have two points, some of which have been posted

1) It aint Ole Miss, a team that has not even won an SEC title (much less a NC) since 1963 is IMHO, not even on a top 10 list of rivals.
2) Like many have said, it varies and because Ala, Aub, FL all have bigger rivals on thier end, I dont think we have one specific rival

IM young opinion:

1. Alabama
2. Auburn
3. Florida
4. Arkansas

Maybe 5 years ago, this would read:
1. Florida
2. Auburn
3. Alabama

...and Arkansas would get a HM instead of #4, along with Georgia and Tennessee. Those two East schools definitely get HM because of our SEC CG history with them and other big games, primarily Tenn.
