re: My thoughts on the Kevin Steele hire

Steele sucks.
Get ready to see OLBs manned-up on slot WRs and MLBs saying prayers to God as they're repeatedly matched up with RBs on wheel routes.
Steele's schemes and his struggles to adjust are laughable.

Then how did his defensive yards per play equal or better chavis' yards per play rankings?

If this happens at LSU, this truly was a terrible hire. In general, it's a bad idea. At LSU, where we pump out NFL DBs on an annual basis, it's grounds for dismissal.
Tre White
Dwayne Thomas
Jalen Mills
Ed Paris
Jamal Peters
Donte Jackson
Kevin Tolliver II
Xavier Lewis
Saivion Smith
Eric Monroe
Andraez Williams
Especially given the fact that we have almost no OLBs returning after 2015, it would be particularly baffling.

Gotta admit, when the Tennessee fans warned us about "Third and Chavis" six years ago, they were right.
So I won't dismiss out-of-hand what a Clemson fan says about Steele.

Sounds like Malleveto manning safeties (Danny McCray) and linebackers (Kelvin Shepherd and Perry Riley) up at nickelback and dime formations

Really? Are those "Tennessee fans" the same ones jumping for joy when Fulmer left? How has that worked out for them?
The facts seem to show that the Chief had some very good D's at Tenn. and some very good D's at LSU.
Tennessee is a good example of be careful what you wish for cause what you end up with can be a hell of a lot worse than what you had.

Yeah, but Clemson is a good example of making a move that's a hell of a lot better than what you had.

Given this guy's horrible losing record at Baylor
How was Orgeron's record at Ole Miss? During his tenure he had a total of 2 wins against teams with winning records and both times against Memphis who finished 7-5. Being a terrible head coach does not make one a terrible coach.

Imo opinion Steele and Orgeron are better than any single dc that would ACTUALLY take the lsu dc job. I'd take Steele and orgeron over the other single candidates.

and that was the real problem. it was all about timing. chavis fricked miles and fricked lsu.
dat simple.

2012-2013 recruiting made the difference. Look at classes before 2011 add the early departures and that = 8-9 wins. 2014-15-16 bringing us back. Maybe 99% a little much but look at recruiting classes leading up to Bama, fsu,Ohio state./. Lsu is back. Qb situation close to resolved. We're close

Now, the way we recruited in 2014 ('15 class) and now ('16 class), that's a different story. BUT, we have had to catch up to the overall talent level that Bama has met for 4-5 years.
People fail to realize this. LSU is just now (2014) recruiting at the same level as Bama. The last time we gathered talent like this was previous to 2011.

Since none of us can see the future, you comment is really little more than speculation.
What Tennessee has experienced since 09 is a 35-40 record and their 4th HC in 8 yrs.
I would suggest we wait and see what happens for as lease 1-2 games before throwing in the towel on a hire, but each to our own.

I'm hoping to see a much higher energy level from both the players and the coaches along with some variance of defensive schemes late in the fourth quarter which Chief never provided.

I'm refraining from casting judgment on Steele, but I'd take Venables in a heartbeat. Replacing a proven coordinator is almost always a game of roulette.

You guys might want to wait until the season is over before arguing who was a better D Coord. Right now there is nothing to base anything off of for Steele.

Bama currently has 15 5 star guys.. Lsu has 5.
The significance is not the star rating itself though, but that it represents the guys listed as 5 star are considered ready to contribute immediately. This is a trench war and that's where the separation usually comes in.
Grimes has been working to get a more productive offensive line and build depth, while Oregeron has been brought in to do the same along the defensive line. The best hope is there are guys on the d-line apart from Godchaux and LaCouture that are ready to take it to another level.

I watched the W. Virginia game over the weekend. To me, the DBs weren't too good. His scheme requires DBs to be able to make open-field tackles at times, which we've historically done well. Those guys couldn't tackle with help. Geno Smith and Tavon Austin did have a field-day, but that team also put up 533 yards against Chavis' defense that same season. WVU put up 595 yards against them. We simply had better athletes and ran away with the win. We ran 69 plays to WVU's 87.

Anybody that believes this is true has P & G glasses on.
I've said this the last couple years and been shite on. I'm glad to see there are a lot of others out there who can acknowledge a simple truth: Alabama has fielded better teams than LSU at least from 2013-2015. Especially true on the offensive and defensive lines.
Time to reverse this trend.
