Irrelevant altogether? No.

Irrelevant as the definitive method to gauge quality of opposition....yes.

Take Arky for example.

They need everyone and their brother to be upset to pole-vault to a lofty ranking. They then immediately lose and return where they were.

I don't know who "they" is and I don't give a shite. It's stupid to act like beating a terrible Florida team who happened to be vastly overrated at the time of the game (due to the stupidity of ranking teams to begin with early in the season) is some historic feat.

I could argue that lsu is the reason for a lot of teams demise.

Let's wait and see the final numbers. Ranking at time of game is almost entirely irrelevant.

I agree the rankings at the end of the season are more relevant than what could be inflated ranking during the sesason.

It's all but irrelevant, yes. I can see an argument for if a team is ranked #1 and you have to go in and beat them and then it turns out they suck and finish at #30 or something. There's probably a psychological angle to playing #1 (although it's not entirely clear that it's a negative one for the underdog).

Other than that, yes it's wholly irrelevant. Florida sucks arse. I don't give a shite what they were ranked at some random date in October.

Should LSU finish the season 14-0, the Tigers will have defeated 9 ranked teams.

We have already tied our own record from 2007.

Just sayin...

Also, Bama played Arky when Arky was ranked in the teens. LSU would get credit for playing a #3 ranked team.

At the end of the seaon if Arky is ranked #8 then LSU and Bama should both be seen a playing and beating an #8 ranked Arky team.

I have watched state basically quit after we played them. They were a mash unit when we got done but almost beat Florida

That was a big win at the time so ranking "at the time" is relevant

This is true and there is no perfect way to measure anything. I think the same was the case with Florida in 07 and that has diminished the significance of that game to those outside LSU. We killed their souls with that years and then we ended up beating the same team that was beaten by a Michigan who lost to Appy St.

Still, final rankings are way more significant that those at the time. Should a win of Texas last year count as beating a top 5 team? FSU this year?

Sure, there's no perfect way. I am arguing that early-mid season rankings are mostly just meaningless and irrelevant. I would love to have a system in which the very first ranking anyone sees is the first BCS in mid-October.

this is also true. But I still think at the time ranking is still somewhat relevant. Not as usefull as end of the year rankings, but they aren't completely useless for the simple fact that if you beat them, they automatically drop in the rankings.

Wow, USC won in 2004 while beating just three ranked teams and one of them was in the NC game.

Which is why I always wonder how 1 team doesn't go undefeated every year in the PAC.

What do you think the average drop is - 5 points? Let's rerun the analysis and add 5 points back to everyone who lost to a given team. It wouldn't affect shitty teams like UF who had no business being ranked in the first place.

This. I hate when I see that on ESPN or even the LSU schedule. Ranking at the time means nothing.

Every game was pitched as some kind of rivalry game - including the final game at home against Oregon State.

So if 2007 was the prior record then why does everyone of the talking heads only talk about the 2 L's that season?
