Good, baw, good. Bo P needs to let him skip spring ball, he has all August to make that up. Is there a better athlete on the baseball team?

Hampton is on a full ride football scholarship. And you think the football coaches will just write off his getting repetitions in the spring?

His curve was nasty, sure hated to see what happened to him, he had a promising career ahead of him.

Yeah, no. He’s on a football scholarship—that comes 1st. He’s on loan to the baseball team. And Paul understands this—it’s given him a great baseball player without having to use one/part of their ridiculously low scholarships. Mo needs to go through his 1st spring because he’s a projected starter next year and they’re putting in a new defense.

I love kids playing multiple sports growing up—I think a lot of skills translate and it makes for a much more well rounded athlete. I’m all for it in college too, if they can handle it. The problem now is that college football and baseball are both pretty much year-round. Missing any time at either really puts you behind. I think it’s much tougher on QBs(for several obvious reasons) in football and position players in baseball because of their timing. They miss all of fall, a few weeks of spring, and don’t get to play in the summer.

And it’s not 1985 anymore—dudes in the SEC are throwing 95+, and missing all those ABs has to put you at a big disadvantage. Jared Mitchell was able to do it because he was never really a huge part of the football offense. He was on the field a lot, but caught 2, 13, and 9 balls respectively. And Chad Jones wound up pitching—thank goodness—because he just couldn’t get enough ABs to prepare for SEC pitching. It’s going to be interesting seeing Mo’s LSU career play out. Hopefully he’s a Kyler Murray and can handle both. But I think there will wind up being pressure for him to choose 1 to focus on for his professional future. And while he may be a better baseball prospect than football (as Cotton pointed out), there’s a much clearer path to the NFL than MLB.

Chris Jackson was a placekicker and started in baseball but technically he was a RS Freshman in baseball.

Please LOL! Ben barley play basketball at LSU.
Played only 32 games and wasn't a major contributor.

LSU Basketball Stats

Best major 2 sport athlete at LSU, IMO and he played Baseball/Football is Jeremy Whitten and its not even close.

You're welcome to that opinion but Mike Miley was a better football player and a better baseball player than Jeremy.

Sorry I am replying this late, but I just saw your reply.

I think you have a reading comprehension issue or a Ben McDonald issue.

The question in the opening post was;
quote:

ETA: I know others have started in football and baseball, but I'm talking specifically about starting as a true freshman

This is why I mentioned Ben McDonald because he started 6 games for LSU's Elite Eight basketball team as a freshman and also started for the LSU's World Series Baseball team as a freshman. Not sure what your problem is because Ben played in all 32 basketball games that year and started in six of those games as a true freshman. He definitely contributed that year as a freshman maybe not in points scored, but in minutes played he helped his team mates get valuable rest. I think I answered the OP question correctly. You on the other hand did not. Jeremy Whitten didn't play in his true freshman year. His first game was in his redshirt freshman year in football and only punted once that year for 36 yards. Hardly a contributer that year. He also didn't play baseball until his redshirt sophomore year.
