It’s concerning that Maurice Hampton hasn’t had an opportunity to get some Reps in Centerfield. I would have thought with Gio injured, he would get some playing time. Is he that much farther behind than everyone else? He was highly recruited coming out of high school.

Mainieri probably doesn't know he's on the team.

Why is it concerning? The rest of this team is filled with talented players as well (despite what the rant might try to tell you). Those other players are focused on baseball year round. Hampton is in football the majority of the year, and is missing out on valuable time working on his baseball skills. He will also miss part of the baseball season to leave for football.

You don't just roll out of bed and be able to play high level SEC baseball. It may either take him focusing on one sport over the other, or take more time than your every day player to get adjusted.

Not saying it's impossible, because players have certainly done it before, but it's not as simple as taking off the shoulder pads, grabbing a bat, and dominating on the baseball field.

Mainieri probably saw him not pay attention and run to 3rd base when it was occupied. I guess since Hampton has played in multiple games that maybe you are the one who didn’t know he was on the team, coach?

Since you are going to find some kind of way to rag on Mainieri, let me help you possibly sound like less of a dumbass while doing it in the future.

It would be more valid to suggest that maybe Mainieri is punishing him for not putting in as much time as the other players by giving everyone else a shot before Hampton, despite Hampton having one of the highest ceilings on the team. It is dumb to suggest that he doesn't even know he's on the team, but you already knew that.

Just maybe try to come with valid criticisms in the future. There are plenty, you just maybe aren't smart enough to pick them out yourself. So, please, take my help.

With the amount of time football players dedicate to football year around in today's game, I just don't know if it is feasible to excel in both. And I'm not just talking about Hampton. I mean anyone.

This is not a knock on Maurice Hampton in any way but given what he’s shown on the football field and what he was offered to sign coming out of high school by big league teams, he’s better off in baseball. He’s got better skills in baseball and a better shot long term in terms of earnings and health. He’s a Tiger and I hope he can pull it off and succeed in both but sports at the college level are so year around now that you’re gonna fall behind in one or both sports. Mo should’ve took the $ from the majors, played in the minors in the summer and played football in the fall for LSU. He had first round talent coming out of high school, some team would’ve let him do it

I think a bullpen pitcher can do it if they have natural nasty stuff like Chad Jones, but a hitter can’t do it anymore. The arms in the SEC are too good to only focus on baseball 4-5 months out the year.

Maybe Mainieri is not as convinced this guy is a superstar as as the experts here are.

The thing that concerns me is what is between the ears with Hampton. He made some base running errors the first year and then the other night made another base running error.

With football he plays a position where you are the last line of defense, depending which formation you are in, and he didn’t perform at a high level last year. Of course, we can contribute a lot of the blame in football to Pelini’s defensive scheme.

I just wonder if the switching sports contribute in not being able to focus. Hopefully, the light comes on because he does have a high ceiling.

Good point. I was referring to hitters in the earlier post, but I do agree with you. I think a bullpen guy could do it. Jameis Winston pitched some out of the bullpen when he was at Florida State.

I remember one the practice report threads mentioning something about him not throwing. Memory is fussy.

We will find out this year if his future is football.

Could you imagine Crews, Drost and Hampton starting in the outfield next year and living up to the hype?

It would still be very difficult to be able to do it but being able to throw upper 90’s with some sort of breaking ball for 2-3 batters can be done on freak natural athleticism alone.

Man he didn’t practice this fall and started back in January
Didn’t play at all during the summer was training with football

He’s an athlete that’s why he was drafted out of high school

He focused on baseball he has so much athletic ability that he would get drafted again
