On paper, he was the perfect candidate. Maybe the smartest coach in D-1, great pedigree, responsible for some great recruiting classes at Duke in the late 90s. Ties to Coach K and Larry Brown and only 33 years old. Calipari was definitely trading at an all-time low in that period, too.

Shows how the "right" decision can backfire on you big time and how less desirable candidates can be much better.

What do you think about bringing him in? I would rate him above Jones, Pearl (lulz at Rantards thinking we should bring in someone with a show clause), Floyd, or someone like that, but there are a lot of problems he brings in as well.

Brad Stevens. The whole Illinois thing is still fresh; he'll listen

He's one of my top picks, but I doubt Alleva would risk it.

Floyd is a great college coach. But I don't think LSU would (or should) go after someone accused of paying for players. There is a reason he stepped down from USC and is now at UTEP.

Really can't see Jamie Dixon leaving an upper tier school in a power conference to a below average program in a lesser conference. It would be like leaving Auburn for NC State in football.

Anyway, I'll go with Floyd, followed by Gregg Marshall for my prediction.

I just hope they go after a top notch Coach, not some experiment. They need to pay some money and get a good One.

This alleva hire will either excite the fan base or piss off everyone.

We will see if the former duke AD is serious about LSU basketball and finding the best coach available.

Lets say we strike out on all our big name HC choices. Does a Chris Collins hire really scare anyone? I would personally love to have a coach from Coach K's tree.

Well, neither you nor I will ever know who he called and who may have turned us down because Alleva would be stupid to alienate the next coach before he steps on campus by admitting to the fanbase that he was the third, fourth, fifth, etc. choice and we really wanted this other guy, but we're settling for JJ.

For all we know JJ could have had this wrapped up Friday and we never approached anyone else, or he could be the 10th option and the other 9 said no.

So "blaming" Alleva is going to be based on a lot of rantards that are just wanting to bitch.

If you can't get Bobby Knight. His son coaches at Lamar.
