The best coaching job this year was done by Virginia's coach, who went .500 in conference, barely made the NCAA tourney, then went to the opposite coast and won a tough California regional, beat Maryland twice, beat Arky, beat Florida twice, beat Vandy twice, and brought home the hardware.

Doesn't that mean they just got hot at the right time?

Going .500 in conference hardly translates to the "best coaching job this year"

With that said, they won it all so congrats to him.

Pitching and coaching are the two biggest factors in the post season. Virginia and Vandy had two of the lowest batting averages in the CWS.

Then why not give the award to Childress? He lost a ton of his best players early yet still had a hell of a season. He found a way to get the best out of his players throughout the year... and the losses were eventually too much.

This will be a very special honor for Coach Mainieri. Coach Mainieri is very proud of himself for this accomplishment.

If we are just going on regular season...

Childress, Dan Heefner, Keith Guttin, or Jim Morris

"I am so very happy,” Bertman said, “to be giving the award to a great coach"

Skip knows baseball and if Skip says it, it must be true!

PAUL MAINIERI...4 time National coach of the year!

Congrats Coach!

He said "regular season coach" under his breath.

So let me see if I've been paying attention to PM's interviews over the course of the season and after-his coaching acumen and in-game decisions carried the Tigers to an outstanding regular season and ranking, then when we got to Omaha, the players failed to deliver? Or am I over simplifying what I thought he said?

It's called "Coach of the Year" and not "Coach of 5 to 6 games".

If you want to get all worked up cause we only finished 5th in the nation, knock yourself out.

Skip called him "a great coach" and I will go with Skip. If you think you know better than Skip what constitutes a "great" college baseball coach, that's your right.

I wasn't aware they had the "ceremony" already. I thought Skips statement was from the announcement.

Anyway, fine honor for a LSU HC to receive. 3 coach of the yr. awards in 9 yrs and 4 overall speaks highly bout his coaching ability as viewed nationally.

Why any LSU fans would seem to have their panties in a wad over it is a mystery to me. Like or dislike the guy and for whatever reason, it's a really nice honor for anyone associated with LSU to receive.

Did you not read Ross' interview with him? Lots of reasons to not like PM.

Who else got interviewed when Mainieri got hired? Did they name the finalist after Smoke left?

Perhaps, but none of those "Lots of reasons" can deny the fact the man is a highly successful or "great", using Skips word, college baseball coach.

Why some feel the need to knock a LSU guy winning a national honor is more than a little odd, but each to our own.

Many of you are complaining about Mainieri for not winning the College World Series this year despite finishing 5/300 and having 4 CWS appearances while winning one in '09.

With the history of LSU, they are considered the Yankees of college baseball.

In the last 14 years, the Yankees have been #1 or #2 in highest payroll and have only one WS Trophy.

2014: San Francisco Giants, 7 ranked
2013: Boston Red Sox, 4 ranked
2012: San Francisco Giants, 8 ranked
2011: St. Louis Cardinals, 11 ranked
2010: San Francisco Giants, 10 ranked
2009: New York Yankees, 1 ranked
2008: Philadelphia Phillies, 12 ranked
2007: Boston Red Sox, 2 ranked
2006: St. Louis Cardinals, 11 ranked
2005: Chicago White Sox, 13 ranked
2004: Boston Red Sox, 2 ranked
2003: Florida Marlins, 25 ranked
2002: Anaheim Angels, 15 ranked
2001: Arizona Diamondbacks, 8 ranked

For college baseball, payroll = scholarships and facilities. LSU has full scholarships (and TOPS) and the best stadium in the country. Winning a World Series is 1/30 and the Yankees have only done it once in the past 14 seasons. Winning a CWS is 1/300. That is 270 more teams competing for the same thing. It is hard to win.

If the Yankees got rid of Joe Girardi or Brian Cashman, they would be gobbled up in a heartbeat by other franchises.

Give Mainieri a break and appreciate the fact that he has a .720 winning pct since coming to LSU.
