Man if you put all the political stuff aside. How great of a college baseball player was that guy. He was like my pistol Pete. I remember going outside trying to dribble, shoot like him. He was so fun to watch. Was unreal

I mean, are you looking for an LSU athlete to entertain you in the sport he/she is skilled at, or are you trying to frick them and get to know them personally?

You may as well boycott football and basketball because I can promise you that once you got to know some of the athletes you cheer for, you'd be disappointed. But who gives a shite what their political or religious beliefs are? That's not what I'm not interested in.

What was his name when he played for LSU?? Not 100%, because I may be a little off... you know, for standing tall and all, but I'm sure his name was Chris Jackson.

I'm not getting into the drama on this issue; the guy can change his name legally and it's his right to do so.

But, a question related to that: how does UCLA refer to their superstar center, in the record books and such? Lew Alcinder (as he was on campus), or Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (as he became later)?

I'd think you list as they were at the time they were playing.

This is what LSU does.

It's the title of the thread. It's also the title of the article on lsusports.net:

Seems odd.

The man can change his name to anything he wants, and I'll happily call him that from that day forth...but it seems odd to retire a jersey with a name on the back that was never there doesn't it? Chris Jackson played at LSU...not Abdul-Rauf.

My guess is that players that change their names probably do not want to be associated with it anymore and request the new name be there...but it still seems odd.

For that matter...what if they'd retired it with Jackson on it than he changed it? do we alter that after the fact?

FWIW, when I reference him as an LSU player it's always as Chris Jackson. If I reference him now, it's Abdul-Rauf.

Kevin Faulk is a legend and a well deserving retirement jersey for him in tiger stadium.

. Yes he is but their are a couple of players that should be before him. Charlie Alexander for sure and maybe Johnny Robinson.

Thanks for the reply.

Yeah, I guess it does make sense to ask the guy, and if he specifically requests his "new" name for personal reasons, you honor that.

Like you said, it's an odd situation. He never really made an impact in the NBA unlike Abdul-Jabbar, so "Abdul-Rauf" is a bit obscure. But "Chris Jackson" scorched the college landscape for 2 years, and I've yet to see his equal on the court.
Usually, when you have a player make SUCH an impression at the major amateur level, he pans out on the pro level too, and there's crossover familiarity of names. More people recall Kareem than Lew, more remember Ali than Clay.

Considering that's basically the only other example relevant to American college basketball, it seems like a good choice.

That's the reason you retire his jersey.

I don't care if a former player later wins the Nobel Peace Prize and/or became Pope or US President, if he WASN'T an exceptional player, you don't hang that jersey in the rafters. You can honor him in some other means, but this is an athletic decision. And that player (whatever you call him) was the best LSU basketball player since Maravich. And that includes Shaq. So if you would ever honor O'Neal, you have to honor CJ too.

I prefer the honor to be reserved for alumni only, but I’m gonna love the melt.
