say I actually buy the OPs logic (a far stretch and a mind-numbing one at that...)

that 2yr University in Eunice actually has a pretty good JUCO baseball team, one of which that has been and continues to grab talent from there.

I will be attending LSUE in the summer. It provides an education close to home.

I'm not saying that LSUE/A/S have no function, they most certainly do. Just given the cuts, priority one must be preserving LSU BR. The convenience of being "near home" as you say does not outweigh the importance of having a strong flagship institution to educate and shape the leaders of Louisiana's future.

I'm from Eunice and received a degree 5 years ago from LSUE, I guess if it wasnt there I wouldve had to attend LSU or Mcneese. However I would imagine that a significant number of students that attend schools such as LSUE or LSUA wouldnt have many options if it werent for these 2 year schools. LSUE nursing is about 2.5 years not 4.

Why I don't agree the money should be taken from the schools to go to LSU athletics, the OP is right with one point. There are too many 4 year colleges in this state. There should be more focus on technical colleges/trade schools instead of saturating the rest of the state with 4 year degrees from many people that really have no business being in a 4 year college. It should take more than a pulse to get into college.

if you want to close those schools fine, I am all for it. But when you spout what you would do with the funds saved, do something that would make good use of them academically. The band, atheletic dept., etc will do well enough on their own. Put the money into professors salaries, staff, repairs of buildings and infrastructure that is crumbling, things which LSU BR needs now and for the future.

There are community colleges which could address some of these needs, but absolutely - such cuts would create some significant obstacles for some members of those communities. No matter where the cuts are made, no one wins. I fully believe, though, that reducing the secondary campuses is a lesser evil than compromising the quality of education offered at the flagship school.

We have too many state funded institutions giving out general degrees. Cut all that crap and force these schools to specialize or get cut. We need to build our community and technical college system so we can get a trained workforce in this state. We need kids who know how to weld not kids with a general studies degree from ULL.

Yes, we have too many 4 year universities.

Probably have other spending priorities though.

That, and has anyone seen the enrollment in remedial courses? The graduation rates? Or the average time to graduation? People will need to read, study and work harder before we have a more educated populace. "Going to class", whether it be elementary, middle, high school or college is a waste of time if there is rampant focus on social aspects and grade inflation. And, yes, LSUA should NEVER have been made a 4-year university. Now, many central Louisiana residents have to take courses from LSUE.

There actually is talk of changes with LSUS and LSUHSC. Included is a rumor of a merger with Tech. I don't think there's much to it though.
