Yes. Even back in the late 70s, the LSU women's team practiced against men; however, it wasn't as organized an endeavor as it is nowadays.

A 1999 SI article talked about how Pat Summitt started doing this when TN hired her in 1974. She said that it was common then and she didn't know who did it first.
