I NEVER understand why teams defer.
If you take the ball, you GUARANTEE yourself either the same number of possessions as the other team during a game, or you get ONE more possesion.
If you defer, it's the opposite. You either get the same amount, or one less. Somewhere in the last 10 years, someone outsmarted the process.
