I don't get this - will the defenses be playing each other? Are they playing the same offense? I will be happy if LSU beats BAMA but that might not mean our defense is better. I would like to see our D shut down Arkansas like their D.

Why take out NW St.? Bama played some piss poor competition to begin the year but they are included?

I think Bama plays more smash mouth type of football, whereas LSU plays agressive & just "freelance" all of the field making plays.

I would be equally afraid to play either defense, but for different reasons.

even with Dre Kirkpatrick at Alabama.

I was watching an NFL game yesterday and they scrolled the top draftees at each position. Morris Claiborne was listed as #1 and Dre Kirkpatrick #3 at conerback.

Interestingly Hightower was listed as the #4 prospect at LB and Upshaw wasn't listed in the top 5. One of these guys had a pick 6 against Florida and looked like an ice wagon. They're good, don't get me wrong, but they're somewhat overrated. We'll run on them some. Not enough to sustain drives but enough to make play action work.

I agree - the real question will be which offense can match up better. As folks have commented - against a weak Florida secondary Bama did not really complete any significant pass plays. If the focus of both teams defesne is on the run - then it comes down to which team can generate more of a passing game. Advantage LSU

they are 3-4 LBs. A different breed. Both are very good. Upshaw is a very good pass rusher.

they are both basically the size of DE's, neither are blazers but very good players

An effective Defense is one which prevents the opponent from scoring points and helps to create good field position.

If the offense is capable of generating points and if the opponent is easily contained then the defense should concentrate on the assignments given by the coach - regardless of whether it pads the stats or not.

WVU had 500 yards but just 21 points - but that was not an issue since LSU had 40.

MSU allowed only 19 - so containing to 6 was necessary.

Once the coaches feel comfortable they can use the game to
1. pad stats
2. try out different strategies
3. get experience for players
4. Try out newer players

Comparing only numbers , especially when both Ds have been dominant in terms of their efficacy is a bit illogical.

It is better served as lagniappe for post season awards and munching on during the off-season.

I agree with what some others have written that we'll see a lot of JJ in that game. Generally I prefer Lee, but JJ is strong as heck and has great ball security which will be key. If Bama makes us one-dimensional we'll need JJ to make the run game go. Then #19 will punish those big fat LB'ers!

On the other hand, I think Bama is slowly closing the QB gap. By the time we play their QB might be fairly good.

i think a guy like Shep could help us stretch them out and make them vulnerable in the middle.

Run some wildcat get them moving horizontally so that we can pound Ware in the middle

Is it really that big of a gap now?

McCarron- 98 of 150 ,1156 yards ,8 TD, 2 int

LSU QBs - 82 of 133 1100 yaards , 10 TD, 1 int

The gap comes from McCarron having never faced a defense of the caliber of LSU whereas LSU's QBs have faced defenses of the caliber of Alabama in the past.

It is a gap of game time experience.

It seems like Ford could be the perfect foil to Bama with his ability to hit the cutback and hit top speed quickly.

True. But you have to figure the team with the better defense will give their offense more time with the ball, force more turnovers, etc.

Hopefully he will be 100% for that game, and hopefully he can find his way out of the doghouse before then
