In the 1970s, the Administration had a student referendum. The choices were the Cavaliers and the Pilots. The student vote was for the Cavaliers, so the administration said that we would be the Pilots. This was before BPCC or LSUS had any teams.

LSU Eunice are the Bengals. LSU-A are the Generals.
S is Pilots because of the riverboat pilots who plied the Red River in the steamboat era. Shreveport was a major center of river commerce. Logo includes a pilots wheel from a ship.
