Holden, I tend to agree that LSU's actions don't constitute censorship. LSU wasn't interfering with or abridging the students' communication. Rather, it was simply exercising its contractual right to control its own communications, namely its formal promotional e-mail.

It's not difficult to reconstruct the thought process of the university. As is their right, they chose a picture from Tiger Stadium to use in a promotional e-mail. They justifiably concluded that an official dispatch from a state funded university should not include the symbols of any one given religion. They exercised their contractual right to airbrush the photo. It's not really that controversial. They are merely tailoring their own communications in a way that is consistent with their understanding of their obligations as a state university.

The students are acting like vages. JMO.

I agree

There was nothing "hypersentative" about this. No lawsuits. No bashing. Just a whole bunch of LSU fans from different backgrounds expressing their dissappointment with an Athletic Department decision. The only reason we even brought it up is because we love repping Christ more than we like being "featured" on LSU emails. Ya of course we like being the face of LSU fans...and we will continue to do so. LSU will probably not use our pics as much. Doesn't mean ESPN, CBS, Fox Sports, CFN, SI, etc. will stop using us....

Not appropriate at all. Our reaction was minute. Sorry if the media blew things up and you were offended, but calling my boys ridiculous things is pitiful.

This - not a case of censorship but simply LSU choosing how it wants to represent itself.

Except they choose to mock Christianity with last years poster with the afore mentioned cathedral quote?

well, yes, I am offended, frankly - every time some proselytizes their personal religious beliefs in public places .

I hope the people that happen to be on the same side of this discussion as you distance themselves from this type of bigotry.

Everyone upset about this is a Christian, and only arguing because it was THEIR religion that got airbrushed out. The same people would be applauding LSU if it were Muslim symbols or Swastikas.

You really think Biblical Christianity and Islam and the Nazis are moral equivalents?

The fact that LSU's Admin elected to remove what was already explicitly present suggests a religious endorsement in and of itself - anti-Christianity.

When did I say this?

quote:

“Those crosses were airbrushed out. ... We don’t want to convey any religious or political message,” said Associate Vice Chancellor for University Relations and Senior Associate Athletics Director Herb Vincent.

Religious: Muslim
Political: Nazi

It's okay to be caught up in your own bias, I wouldn't expect anything different.

A lot of folks don't care what you wrote - the larger discussion is should LSU have done this at all, not whether or not you made a stink about it.

I appreciate your position and explanation. IMHO what LSU did was by definition censorship. But what makes it indefensible is that it didn't have to happen. LSU didn't have to post the photo. They chose to post the photo.

The university may be within their rights but that doesn't mitigate the censorship factor in play. Just my opinion.

Because someone might be offended at the barely perceptible image?

Geez, from reading it I thought they would have been carrying big crosses or something, not that they had a small cross on the upper chests.

What bullshite by LSU.

Oh and for those of you who asked: We painted "DON'T GET TOO COCKY". We always paint something original. It usually consists of a witty phrase, opponent joke, player praise, Les quote, etc.

I didn't get to read the whole thread, but why did LSU choose to remove these crosses but they don't remove every single cross from every single picture that is posted on their website. (check out many of the baseball player's photos on lsusports.net who were crosses around their necks)
