Just to clarify some of the misconceptions in this thread, a "hate crime" is a simply a crime motivated by racial animus or some other form of bigotry. Calling someone the N-word is not a hate crime. It's not even a crime. In fact, under the law of most jurisdictions, mere words -- even despicable ones -- are not considered adequate provokation for battery.
