LSU Oversigns?
When did any of those teams tell a qualified incoming recruit days before practice started that he doesn't have a scholarship ? You may be right but I can't recall a situation any time recently where a team did that.
Ok smart arse, what should Miles have done?
How would Tressell have handled the situation other than pucker his arse and hope the refs give him a phantom interference call?

Pretty sure Harry Coleman greyshirted, but I could be mistaken. I do know that, if he did, he didn't quit.
Pretty sure Josh Johns did too.

Looks like GT can't get dick for people to qualify. Averaging 19.66 signees over the last 9 years. Only Wake Forest, Stanford, and Northwestern signed less
They are all doing amazingly well in football, considering they are such high end academic schools.

I follow Iowa recruiting only and know for a fact that they don't oversign players and that if they do greyshirt a player they let them know during the recruiting process. Our starting LG Julian Vandevelde was a greyshirt but he knew when he signed that he was going to be a greyshirt going in.
The closest Iowa has been to recruiting 26 players was 24 in 2008 & 2009. That's 1 player short of the scholarship limit (25). They never had to deal with the issue because they haven't reached the limit. Here's the last 6 years

This thread is absolutly ridiculous.. Some dude bashing us for signing to many players when nobody thought everybody would be able to make it through clearinghouse. Sorry Iowa cant get enough players to come to ever have that problem..

Give me some examples outside of the SEC
BCS Titles since 2000:
SEC - 5
Big 10 - 1
PAC 10 - 1
Big 12 - 2
Big East - 0
ACC - 1
With three different SEC teams winning the last four titles, it makes us more attractive to high school players. SOOO, other conferences may not have this problem at the moment.

A lot of booms and trash talk yet still not one example of a school outside of the sec doing it to an eligible incoming freshman.
Nothing wrong with it but don't lie and say everybody does it.

So you don't think Iowa could sign 30 players if they wanted to? Maybe they just choose to do things with a higher moral code than some other schools or maybe they know that most of the players they recruit will qualify. Frankly, I think it is wrong for any University to oversign in the hopes of some not qualifying and should be outlawed.

How the hell do they make the 85 man limitation? Their cruel coach must have to kick someone off the team. Since we know it is not an incoming freshman (see earlier posts) I can only assume he crushes the dreams of someone who has been with the program for at least a year. What an evil bastard.

Why is this worse than crapping on some kids dreams who has been with the program?

Not one time has Coach Ferentz dropped a player because there wasn't enough room under the scholarship limit. In fact, a lot of walkons that earn starting jobs or playing time get rewarded with a scholarship later in their career. Every team has attrition due to players leaving school, quitting football, injuries, players getting in trouble and players going pro.

It happens all the time at schools everywhere, more so in the South, yes, but thats also where the most competitive programs are each year.
the south is also where the school systems are usually less effective. making it less likely that all recruits will qualify.

Agreed.
In the SEC, a lot of players move on do to "mutual agreement". We will never know if we have the real story on why on most.
Les could have squeezed someone (else?) out but chose not to, probably because he didn't see this coming. Porter was the unfortunate victim.
I'm not really trying to defend this because I think it should have been handled better.
I believe Les Miles tries to run things as honestly as he can, while remaining competitive.
Miles got caught off guard and he shouldn't have. Sucks for Porter. Hope he comes back, I like him.

Another reason to really like this guy. I would love to have him as a coach. I think he runs a good program, is a good coach and a good person. I like Iowa and the Iowa brand. Goo dluck to ya.

Quick question though.........how do you propose that teams deal with this attrition?

Thanks, I like LSU as well and really respect their overall athletic program. As big of a college football that I am, this is the first time I've ever heard of this happening (naive I know). I was just trying to get a feel for how often this happens and if it was a big deal or not. Apparently it happens at a lot of schools and not something I would be a fan of.
Good luck to LSU in 2010, think you guys obviously have the talent to win the SEC and maybe make another run at the NT.
