I am trying to understand the limitations to getting the 2022 Roster back to 85 Scholarship Players. As I understand it, a university can sign 25 players plus any unused scholarships from the previous recruiting class. Then sign an additional 7 players from the transfer portal to fill this class. If this does not fill the gap to get the team back to 85 Scholarship Players how does one do that?

You seem to understand the rules. What exactly are you asking? Are you wondering how close we get to 85 next year after everything settles? My guess would be 75-80.

You answered my question. We will not get to 85 this season.

Yes. But only if you have equal or more plays that transferred out after a specific date (Dec 23rd?) and before May 1st of 2022. It’s 1-for-1, up to 7.

Well, I gave you a guess. I’m not actually Brian Kelly.

Yes and LSU is already at the 7 transfer outs. This rule as of now is only for 2022. I wouldn’t be surprised if it becomes permanent. Maybe not 7 a year but some amount will probably be the rule.

Last year we gave ourselves a bowl ban and reduction of scholarships. But generally a school has 85 scholarships at a given time. Players redshirt, greyshirt, and receive injury exceptions. So some players count towards the 85 longer than 4 years. But let’s assume you signed all 25 and they only stayed four years that would mean 15 players would have to leave within that 4 year span since you can’t have more than 85

How many players has LSU signed over the previous two classes and how many have transferred out?

If you were an above average lineman or TE in High School and are now at LSU, it’s a good time to walk on - you may be able to really help the team in practice and even get a year or two of school paid for.
