re: LSU Football Players "implicated" in bar fight

Let me explain to you why this upsets me. This nation is only just now emerging from ten long years of war. In this war, only a tiny fraction of a percentage of the population volunteered to go fight. Thousands of them died. Tens of thousands of them were maimed. Hundreds of thousands saw and did things that will never leave them. Granted this was their job, they volunteered for it and they were paid for it. But it is not the same thing as being a teacher or a garbage man. It is not in the same universe as being a teacher or a garbage man.
My uncle served in the marines during desert storm. Both of my brothers have served in Iraq in the last 5 years. I love them very much and am very appreciative of their service and dedication to our country but that doesn't mean they are entitled to special treatment.

Marines got into fights all the time and often lost. 90% of the fights in bars that I saw Marines in (and I participated in a few) involved Marines fighting other Marines.
Sorry... this made me laugh. I started trying to do the math... "got into fights all the time and often lost" ---- 90% Marines fighting other Marines...
so, quick calculations, at least 90% of the Marines fights had a Marine losing?
Maybe it's because I'm ex-Army that it is a funny statement to me.
/thread hijack.

why does it matter when jj didn't know? this guy in regular clothes is a guy in a bar fight. jj and the team don't know his history.

except the marine didn't say that on here. his friends who had 2nd hand info said it.
those same friends also changed the story a few times

JJ has never had anything kind of legal problems in his time at LSU.
he deserves the same benefit of the doubt you guys are giving the marine who just finished basic training.

Just finished training and could be about to deploy to Afghanistan for all we know.

It's been a long day but I think there were a couple around 40-60.
And now I'm off to bed.

Even more IMO.

how long he has been in really doesn't mean anything. its not like jj and team asked the guy if he was marine and then whaled on him.

Dude just finished basic training, hardly a veteran.
This plays right into my point.
I understand that he might been new the Corps and not yet deployed. But it's not about him. It's about the tradition of service that he has stepped into. It's about everyone who came before him. It might be hard for me to communicate this, but I have the same protective emotions for this young man, whom I've never met and who might not even exist, as I would for a Marine in my old platoon in Iraq.
The kid made the decision to sign on the line. He made the decision to write a blank check to the nation that can be cashed at any time with his life.
But the moment he's beaten up by the LSU quarterback, the story becomes, "He hasn't really done anything. How dare it be mentioned that he's a Marine."
I hope I'm not being too hyperbolic about this. And I take back the comment that I won't watch any games this season. I've been a fan since I was three. Of course I will watch. I'm just saying that the experience of reading this board will definitely stick with me, and sap much of the enjoyment.

that is his job and i thank him for doing that but it has no relevance to the actual story. once again its not like who ever was in this fight researched his back ground real quick and decided it would be fun to kick a marine around.

This thread was littered with those asinine comments. Rummy (or whoever) cleaned it up quickly.
Anyway, we need to move on from the military debate. That's not what this is about.

Why the hell does it matter if this guy is a marine or not? How the hell did him being a marine dearial this thread so badly?

ah, gotcha. no wonder i missed them.
well then those people suck at life.

It doesn't matter that he was a Marine to the legal system. Being a Marine affords you no special rights in a courtroom. And he may be subject to military justice.
But it will matter in the court of public perception if his story is true.
But not here on Tiger Droppings.

Because some people were using it as ammo and others were bashing him for being a Marine. Again, it was ridiculous, but someone (I think Rummy) handled business.

saying he is new and doesn't matter is stupid, him being a marine has no relevance at all to the story though. once again its not like whoever hit him sought out a marine to whale on. the kid put himself into the fight and the fact he is a marine shouldn't matter because it has nothing to do with the story.
the comments saying he deserved it for being a marine are wrong as well as those saying he just got in so he is less of marine are wrong. also acting like he is some kinda god and can't do anything wrong and the football players were out of line only because he is a marine is wrong. once again they didn't know he was a marine so its not something that matters in the story. it would matter if they went out looking for a marine but they didn't

Don't let it get to you man. The Rant and the OT are the underbelly of anonymous society. These people are animals.
