Y'all keep acting as if Les underutilized him, but let's not forget Ensminger took over as offensive coordinator halfway through 2016. He was the tight ends coach and he had plenty of experience working with Smith. If he's so good like some of you insist, why didn't Ensminger use him more?

Colin Jeter is a better player, period.
Well, he did have 10 rec last year (184yds), 8 of those coming after Orgeron took over. So there's that. In the prior 3 years he had 9 rec for 162yds.

So in 4 years just under 50% of his receptions came under Orgeron (2 rec under Miles in 2016) and over 50% of his yards.

Btw, I'm tempted to agree with your last statement, as it pertains to the NFL. I see them as two different types of TE's where Jeter is your stereotypical (not prototypical) NFL TE where Desean is the "new breed" we see coming out in the Evan Engram mold.

ETA: sorry alumni95, didn't see your post. I basically repeated what you said.

Chill out. Some of you act as if Desean Smith was OJ Howard when he's not even close.

hmmmm.... he is obviously talented, and very athletic or he wouldn't have just signed a contract to play in the NFL.

end of story.

he is what he is.

I find it weird that people think he could have been "developed" on some way.
he had 4 years to improve. he didn't.

Interesting... tell me, how many other TE's excelled in the passing game under Miles? So, did they all suck too? And since they couldn't "develop", does that mean Miles was a poor evaluator of TE's all throughout his tenure?

you people,

Our system SUCKED. There is no telling how many other players got caught up in the trash. I mean, how many years has shepard been in the NFL now? He couldn't improve either?

Obviously "they" feel differently about him and SIGNED him.

OK, but does that indicate he'll have success at the NFL level?

I'm just tired of everyone saying he's a great athlete when his pro day numbers prove otherwise. Don't compare him to OJ Howard or Evan Engram because he's not as good as them.

You don't understand how NFL rosters work, do you?

Don't get me wrong, which you seem to be doing with what many, not just I, are saying here.

I'm not comparing his athletic ability to that of Evan Engram. I was comparing his "mold", i.e. intended primary use, of types of TE's that are in use today, both in college and NFL.

Am I an expert with regard to the management of NFL rosters... No.

However, what I do know is that he just signed to play at the highest level of football in the world. He may, or may not make it, but I'm quite certain they evaluated a shite ton of TE's and decided on him.

I just don't understand why people always have to try and find the negative first around here.

Tackle? He's like 240lbs. It would take at least year for him to get anywhere near the weight he'd need to play OL and an NFL team isn't going to keep someone around to maybe gain a bunch of weight, then maybe learn how to play OL, then maybe be good enough to contribute. That's like a 3yr project minimum.

I'm not trying to be negative, but when everyone in this thread is misinformed, I'm going to address it.

Just because he's signed now doesn't mean anything. He's going to have to survive multiple cuts going forward, which will be tough as an UDFA.

You seem to be the one that is misinformed. DeSean Smith will make it in the NFL because of his talent and the Carolina Panthers picking up on that talent. To answer the poster up above you these talented players like Shepard for instance, made it in the NFL despite Les Miles and their careers at LSU. They were under used or used wrong by Miles and Cameron while at LSU, and some played out of position, but despite limited careers at LSU the talent that these guys had still shined through enough to convince these teams to give them a job. And DeSean Smith is just another example in a long line of them and it will be his talent that gets him on with Carolina and nothing else. He is not a 4.9 running TE as I mentioned earlier, he is battling his way back from a calf injury. Once healthy the Panthers will see a really good route running and pass catching TE that could be a good back up to Greg Olsen. He needs to gain about 10 pounds to me and work on his blocking, but I'm sure he's ready to work. For some reason you seem to be hard on the guy for some unknown reason and I don't get why. And no Jeter is not a better pass catching TE than him, better blocker, yes, but not a better receiver.

Why'd he run if he was injured?

You realize how probably won't make it for the Panthers, right? Just because he's with them now doesn't mean anything.

I don't know, arse, why don't you ask him why he felt the need to compete when he didn't have to?? And if he does make it on the team won't you feel like the arse since you're the only one kicking him. And why are you so down on Smith? Did he frick your wife??

It's because I'm able to reason unlike you. His pro day numbers were among the worst of any tight ends in the draft so maybe there is a reason he wasn't utilized as much as you thought he should have been. We can all agree that the offense was an issue, but it's not like he was some stud player, either. I'm arguing because y'all act like he's going to be a NFL player when it clearly is a long shot. There is a reason he wasn't drafted.

Back in the day I thought D'Angelo Peterson would've been that guy. But alas... no.
