I guess the old school slide step by a pitcher takes a year for old Paul to implement. Maybe he should have known this was a problem last fall. Oh wait, he didn’t. Same coach I watched make goo goo faces with his grandchild during the 9th inning of a one run sec game.

I wish you were our head coach. Obviously you know more about coaching college baseball than Mainieri, Dunn or Cain.

Garza not being 100% really hurt us
Him being healthy & having Milazzo is a huge positive from last season

He did, and pitchers and catchers spent a lot of time on it last fall.

I’d argue that Brock Mathis not working out hurt us more. I think everyone thought he would pan out a lot better defensively than he did.

I hate it for the kid too I really wanted him to be successful here

Yeah, I thought he was going to be a good one. I always expect first year catchers, either freshmen or JC transfers, to struggle. And I think part of the reason we didn't do as well as we thought we were going to for the past couple years is that for 2 years in a row we were starting from scratch at catcher.

Getting Garza back is going to pay huge dividends this year, and in the future. It's going to allow for Milazzo to play with less pressure on him since he won't be asked to carry the load as a freshman. Plus we can work Travinski in as well.

I don't know that we will be bringing in a HS catcher in the offseason because the one we have committed keeps pushing himself up the draft charts. I know we're eying a JC catcher though and if they feel like Travinski isn't progressing enough to give innings there next year, they're probably going to bring in the JUCO kid.

Wasn’t there a catcher that we expected to get after Papierski that ended up going pro? Or am I remembering that wrong?

I do too. LSU baseball would have at least two more championships.

Pure ignorance. Plus selective amnesia.

Plus some apathy. That’s why he’s questionable at this point in his career.

Mason Doolittle came in as a freshman the same year Hunter Feduccia came in from LSUE. Doolittle got scared of the competition and transferred to JUCO after the fall under the guise of wanting to remain draft eligible.

He didn't get drafted after his freshman year and subsequently committed to Appalachian State. He got drafted after his sophomore year at JUCO and signed pro.

ETA: He would be a junior this year. Him leaving is what spurred us on to recruit Mathis and Garza, who were in the same class.

That’s right I knew there was something that hurt the depth at the position

Do you actually not remember what was happening with our pitching staff and starting catcher (for the first 2.5 months of the season) last year?

Once Garza returned to catching almost full time, we vastly improved in throwing runners out. Mathis didn't have it when he was catching full time. That's why he's no longer on the team.

So you’re saying Paul’s idea of the team working together and improving footwork isn’t the problem? Because that’s what Paul wants to work on.

This guy and the guy that said our catcher were the Achilles heel of the offense last year must be related.

Maybe you didn’t read the op. Paul was clear about what he thinks the problem was and what he wants to work on. Please read the op before replying.

Paul says it’s just a little footwork problem. They are working on it.

It's about fricking time they started coaching how to hold a runner. Pitching staff haven't given the catchers a shot in (at least) 3 seasons.

New batting coach and teaching the pitching staff to hold runners, now all the players need is for the dugout to call bunts and move runners.
