Hess will not be used like Coleman at any point during the season. He will not start on Friday and then come out the pen on Sunday. Only exception to that would be in Omaha in an absolute must win situation, but even then I doubt you see it. Contrary to rantards beliefs, CPM is usually pretty protective of his pitchers.

He is protective, but he has used certain arms like this before. Hess may throw too hard or too often to do it, but Coleman threw pretty hard as well. You never know.

This is something that was discussed last season when we never seemed to have a reliever ready in time. But it's part of the staff trying to protect guys arms. They don't want guys up and down warming up a ton, if it's not guaranteed they'll get in the game.

We may not, but the way the bullpen outside of Hess (who had to be moved to sure it up) and Newman performed last year, an extra shutdown arm might be necessary (if others don't step up).

Hess wasnt moved to sure up the BP. He was never a starter, outside of starting a few midweek games, which you can't really consider a start because he is throwing so few pitches. He moved to the pen exclusively during SEC play because he was one of the better arms we had, and thats where he would be needed at that point in the season.

Someone should tell Coach Mainieri that's what he really did.

LINK

Before Hess was moved after A&M he had 8 appearances, 6 starts. Coach Mainieri said he made the move to sure up the pen.

quote:

"I think Zack Hess has done a good job as a fourth starter," coach Paul Mainieri said Monday. "And I think once Poche and Lange are gone, I think Zack is the frontrunner to be a weekend starter for us next year. But at this point I think he's too valuable to burn up in the middle of the week, and then that makes our bullpen a little bit more thin."

I dont remember Hess throwing enough in a mid week start to put him on the shelf for the weekend more than 2-3 times. He was the midweek "starter," but did not throw starters innings. Name the last midweek starter who would go 5-6 innings every Wednesday.

Coach Mainieri specifically said Hess went so deep in the midweek he felt it hurt the pen. I take him at his word.

I'm not even sure what you are arguing about. I said Hess was moved to the pen during SEC play to sure up the pen. He tried the 4th starter thing, but Hess was clearly more needed out of the pen last year. In most cases CPM has never burnt an arm on Wednesday that he could use on the weekend.

It became a throw 3 on Wednesday and 1 or 2 on Sat or Sun. Or throw one inning all three weekend games.

There isn't an argument. Mainieri said he moved him to the pen to sure it up after A&M. See the link and several other articles stating same.

I used to have the statistics to back this up, but I lost all my spreadsheets at the end of November. Everything I built over the past 2 seasons, summers, etc, all gone.

But Hess did go deep as a starter at least a few times. He never saw a lineup a third time from what I remember, but he went 4 or 5 plus like 3 times.

Ok. I read back and now see where I stated something wrong. Obviously he moved him to sure up the pen. I meant he was never really a true starter (meaning a 6 inning midweek person). Sure he was the first pitcher throwing some midweek games, so technically he was a starter.

Totally unrelated, but I was in Ohio on business a couple weeks ago and at the airport was a can of Cheerwhine. I was like ohhhhhhh that’s what his name means. I had no clue wtf it was.

Y’all are acting like Coleman was Friday starter and Sunday closer all year long. If we make a super, And Hess is still the Friday guy, id bet heavily on him making multiple appearances.

Yeah, Cheerwine is pretty regional. It's originally from North Carolina, and gets harder to find as you get farther away from the Carolinas. Not sure where you'd find any in Louisiana.

When did I say that? I responsed to the person saying Hess might be used to start on Friday and then appear out of the pen on Sunday.

And I bet that is highly highly unlikely. But I said, the only way it's even consisered is in a CWS situation. A game 3 of a super to go to Omaha is pretty much the same, but I wouldnt count on it happening with Hess.
