The Disunion series started last year and has been a wonderful reading experience. Hopefully, people from outside of Louisiana will read Jones' offering and learn something about our colorful and unique Civil War history. My family served in the 10th Louisiana, two companies of which were comprised of Austrian (actually Croatian) troops. Most of the rest were Poles and Italians from New Orleans.

great read. great writer.
don't worry about the history, lsu's first superintendant was wm. t. sherman.
i have an original unpublished color drawing of the tiger's uniform from bull run.
i'm trying to get it published. my g.g.g.grandfather was a famous artist (l. fremaux) and a civil engineer (designed slidell.)
i'd love to share it w/ lsu.

Never.
We should never be ashamed of our history of being drunken hellraisers feared throughout the land.
When you toss a piss balloon, remember that you're just carrying on an old family tradition.

It is just me or does most of that read like a typical gameday/tailgating story?

I'm sure those tigers would really love our boys carrying on their namesake. I'm sure the players take it as a great honor as well. The south will rise again.

Awesome post. Another reason I am proud to be from Louisiana. By the way, anyway to get an emoticon waving a Louisiana flag?

Reminds me a lot more of my time as a student at LSU.

that was a great read. it does explain alot about how, til this day, most of us still have this type of instinct in our blood. especially the part about the whiskey.
Yep...

I wouldn't worry about any of the PC types trying to take away the name....the Tiger lineage on the field artillery side of the house and insignia is still in the order of battle of the United States Army....141st and 935th Field Artillery....
and don't forget the Flying Tigers!!!!

When their ammunition expired at the Second Battle of Bull Run, they refused to retreat and began throwing rocks at the Yankees.
Now I understand what is wrong with some of the posters on this board. Direct descendants no doubt. Great read.

Within six months after arriving in Virginia, members of Wheat’s Battalion engaged in a drunken street brawl in Lynchburg, fought the First Kentucky with rocks in camp, and lit into the 21st Georgia when the Georgians ran off with the Louisianians’ whiskey bottle. In the latter incident, 10 members of the Tiger Rifles took on an entire company of Georgians and were badly beaten. The Georgians’ captain apologized for his men’s theft but warned the bloodied Tigers they could have been killed if had not intervened. While walking away, one defiant Tiger called over his shoulder, “We are much obliged, sor, but Wheat’s Battalion kin clean up the whole damn Twenty-first Georgia any time.”

Just finished the book a short time ago - it's a great read.

Given the true history, LSU's school colors should be red, white and blue with a Rebel soldier (A la the Tennessee Vol) in the middle of a Confederate flag.
Let's see now, "Rebel the Tiger" has a nice ring to it. Better late than never.
