I honestly cannot help but see improvement over last year. Take each player and rate them positionally and the LSU Tigers will be better all around.

Your thoughts please...

Not better at kicker and inside linebacker. That’s all I got.

I think we’re set everywhere but the two biggest unknowns for me are OT and kicker. Relying on a freshman kicker may have its ups and downs. We won’t achieve any of the goals this team has if they can’t be better at OT.

Yep, D White is a once in a lifetime talent , but we have really great guys to fill that hole, so very small drop-off...

I know we’re all excited about Stingley, but I’m not ready to say we’ll be improved at corner yet.

Improved DL play and pass rush should help the secondary though.

Nah.

Love Brossette but he didn’t do anything last year that can’t be replaced by the group we have.

The ceiling is much higher if the freshmen are SEC ready for that three game stretch at the end of October or if Curry can make strides the way he should.

CEH and lf can handle things until then.

As with the D, improved play on the line should be a big boost as well.

Kicker - We’re probably worse
Inside linebacker - Probably the same
Tight End - Our one is probably worse, but our depth will be better
Cornerback - Probably the same, maybe worse

Defensive line - Much better; Better depth and more experience
Outside linebackers - Much better. Chaisson back; enough said
Safety - Better. Delpit is back, and Stevens has gained experience
Offensive line - Much better. This group was young last year.
Receiver - Much better. Like Oline, this was a young group.
QB - Better at the most important position on the field due to having experience from last season. Also a healthy Brennan allows the coaches to be less careful with Burrow in the big games.
Running Back - Much better. Last year is the first in a long time without a first rate RB. We will have at least one this year, and the fact that he’s a freshman matters very little.

Coaching - Better due to the addition of Brady and the stability of the staff.

I can almost guarantee you RB will not be a major issue this year. Freshman RBs can take care of business quicker than a freshman DL/OL.

Emery and/or Davis will produce behind the more senior guys early in the season, with Emery likely to take a starting role at some point.

Yes, everyone expects the position to be more dynamic but it is still unproven right now.

Kicker and OT worry me the most. We got spoiled in one year with Tracy. Just one year before him I would chalk up almost 2 loses because of our kicking game. We still haven't upgraded our tackle positions sure they have one more year of experience but are they any good? We shall see

Biggest problem for the tigers for 7 or so years is the offense line! Put Tua behind our offense line & see how he does!

Brosette had like 50 carries before last year. CEH had almost 150 last year.

We’re in a much better position at RB going into the season than we were last year and a Brosette didn’t really do anything that will be all that difficult to replicate at least.

That’s even if the freshmen don’t do anything more than Curry did, and I don’t think anyone expects that.

Plus, as I said, with the improved OL play and better chemistry with Burrow and the WRs the running should be much easier.

A rising tide should lift all boats, so to speak.

RB will be just fine at worst, and likely better.

I agree with most of your breakdown Penrod, although:

quote:

Inside linebacker - Probably the same

That’s pretty a bold statement.

quote:

Running Back - Much better. Last year is the first in a long time without a first rate RB. We will have at least one this year, and the fact that he’s a freshman matters very little.

I agree RB will be improved, but not sure I’m sold that we’ll definitely have a “first rate RB”, at least not when we really need them during that October stretch.

Even LF didn’t really get comfortable and “first rate” until late in 2014. Keiland took until November to take over in 06. Even JV needed time to emerge in 03 and he was already a year older after sitting out 02. Same with Hill in 12.

RB is a place where freshman can contribute, yes. But it isn’t as easy as being “first rate” the first time they step on the field.

CEH can do what NB did, and probably do even more in the passing game, but he hasn’t proven he’s “first rate”, yet.

quote:

Coaching - Better due to the addition of Brady and the stability of the staff.

This is my biggest beef.

I agree the stability will be a positive, but Brady has shown absolutely nothing that proves he is a positive addition. If anything, it is just as likely to threaten to upset the stability and comfort that E has built up than be some great positive.

Not saying I think that’s what will happen but it’s simply a complete unknown.

Burrow himself is the biggest improvement and probably even understated by you even though you gave him great respect.

I fully believe LSU hasn’t had a fully prepared leader like him since Flynn, and I think the offense is going to look very similar to that 07 unit actually mainly because of his command of the offense and the game in general.

The same way Flynn sat and learned, Burrow did as well, and he actually had the benefit of a year as a starter. They are similar players, both able to run more than you think with maybe not the strongest arm but can definitely make the throws when needed.

Imagine that, an offense like 07 with a defense like ‘11 (another comparison I’ve made frequently).

That’s honestly what I imagine this team looking like.

Kicker. Stone Cole was a game changer.

My one concern is OT. Saddiq took a step back last year and DeCullus has no lateral quickness at all. Dudes were getting beat on the edge way too often. I’m hoping maybe one of Traore, Rosenthal, Wire or Bradford can push these guys in camp and be part of a rotation or start. If we see no improvement at the tackle spot it’ll limit the offense and we’ll be in the same boat as the last few years

Not convinced we will better at Cornerback.

May not be worse, but we may be starting a true freshman. And as much potential as he has, he’s still a true freshman.

Offensive Coordinator. Let’s see the game day calls before we all assume Brady is the Messiah, E and O are still in charge. We’ve been sold a bill of goods about our offense every offseason for well over a decade, that’s reason enough to be skeptical.
