Friends and I were trying to remember the whole story about what happened to LSU quarterback Pat Screen. Does anyone know the whole story or is there a link?? I know this predates a lot of you guys, but I am sure there are some who know this.

Died of an overdose in a hotel room in New Orleans. Not sure of what. Suicide. He loved his family very much. Was a reasonably good Mayor of Baton Rouge. Just was a very depressed and troubled man.

Joe Labruzzo was an animal that day. He pounded that defense for 3.3 YPC, but scored 2 TDs. Bigtime upset of the Hogs.

I met Pat Screen when he was an attorney in Baton Rouge before he became the mayor. I was probably 13 or 14 at the time and had a copy of Peter Finney's 75 Years of LSU Tiger Football. I wanted to get Screen's autograph. He took the book and returned it a week later with a half dozen tiger autographs including Joe Labruzzo, Doug Moreau and Goerge Bevan.

I met him a few times while I was at LSU. Nice dude. I worked at the Legislature when he was Mayor.
I don't think he was "with" anyone when he died, he just OD'ed.

I don't know what it was when he was at LSU but for some reason Mac's qb's couldn't keep their knees solid. Screen and Nelson Stokley both went down with torn up knees. Both could have been among the best to ever play at LSU.
I don't think it a stretch to say that problems with his knees is probably how he got hooked on drugs.
I remember a game against Bama in which Screen set the record for pass attempts in a game. First time I ever saw the Shotgun. Bama dominated us something like 31-7.
When I was batboy for the Tigers Screen was also on the bb team. It seems odd I can't remember what position he played. Was one of the most popular guys on the team and was always kidding around with me.
I never would have dreamed he would end up like he did.

As a close personal friend of the family, I thank everyone for keeping this positive. Many things have been written about Pat's demise; some pretty bad. But let me tell you, he was a great Dad to his children and Husband to Kathy. Today, his family is as solid as ever and I know Pat is in heaven looking down onto his family and is a proud man. Kudo's to one of our greats in the Tiger family.

Many people forget the blocking full-back who took on many line-backers to open the holes for Joe Labruzzo and others, his name is Don Schwab and is one of the most un-heralded backs in LSU football history.

Pat got hooked on pain killers, drink and cocaine. He went through treatment a few times but could not stay clean. Like many a good man, he got pulled down by addictions.
He would be the first to say, get help when you need it....

Amen dugie--Schwab was not only a great blocker but a very underrated running back when he got the ball. Damn good football player. Schwab and Labruzzo were very close friends too.

he did something right. Used to know his son, and considering his dad was a former LSU qb and mayor of BR, his son was a really grounded/real person. Tragic end to Pat Screen's life.

He was a huge improvement over Woody Dumas that's for sure. He had his moments, though.
