a former player is suing the school and named coaches in the lawsuit. Why would they not ask about it?

Bc it is an ongoing lawsuit and they know there is no way in hell that Kelly is going to say anything substantial about the subject

You still have to ask if your job is to cover the program. Kelly did a nice job of side stepping the question and making about their support of Greg but what if he decided to go on a tirade about how lawsuits of this nature are bad for the sport and they will make schools more hesitant to help the next player? That would be crazy for Kelly to do but don't tell me there isn't a coach out there somewhere that might take that stance.

One's like they lawsuit one don't bother me as much as the "coach can you talk about how coach x or player y has helped the team". Questions that have no specifics suck because they usually lead to no new or valuable information.

B/c the coach who is being sued cannot comment on the pending lawsuit. Why waste your question when you received a statement saying, “we can’t comment”?

As an independent reporter it’s a legitimate topic and one you’re expected to ask. You put the coach on the record with his response and move on if he chooses not to elaborate. No harm no foul, and you can ask the question without being antagonistic

What's dumb is people who think the media is there solely to advance a team's best interests and essentially act like cheerleaders.

And that’s exactly what happened? The coach got on the record and that was it.
