What would the explanation be for a junior or senior lineman looking so unimpressive thus far? The strength and stamina seem lacking and his footwork and technique are atrocious. Granted he is snapping the ball well but the center should be anchoring the block, contend for the smartest or most aware lineman, and be the leader of that group.

The entire line but specifically Clapp an Weathersby got whipped by Syracuse.

Our OL took a serious serious step backwards since Orgeron took over.

I watched the first half of the Syracuse game again and the center/RG combo was a cluster. I'm not football smart enough to know if it was technique or missed assignments but watching just the middle of the line there was a hole or someone getting through every other play.
A lot of pulling, chipping and trying to get to the next level instead of just manning up on your guy and blocking him. Whatever it was it obviously failed miserably.

It looks like we're running a HB screen every time Etling drops back. I'm not even kidding.

Multiple times there was a defender in the guard center gap when the RG would pull left. The center should first be stepping toward that defender with his right foot. This closes the distance, engages the block and turns the defender away from the play side (left). Multiple times Clapp would step backward as if in pass protection with his right foot as his first move. On one occasion, Clapps right foot was so far back he tripped up the pulling guard who managed to regain his balance but effectively cut Clapp's leg out from under him and allowed the defender to shoot right through the now vacated guard position into Guice.

At other times in pass protection the guard and center could not effectively double team pass block a single D lineman who was smaller than either of them. Usually a result of allowing the defender to get inside of the blocker to his chest and stand him up while the O linemans feet stopped moving.

Baffling

What really sucks is Dodd should be here playing center so Klapp can play guard. Klapp was a freshman AA guard and an All SEC guard last season but because of all these guys leaving he has to be moved. Klapps struggles are a microcosm of the Oline so far this season.

Center is a guard and a good one. O let Dodd go.
Guards now make a LOT more money in the NFL these days. Just ask Trai Turner.

I'm wondering if the buffoon was really the online coach and that's all he really knew

That’s what I’m starting to think as well. I never liked the Grimes hire, but we still inexplicably had above average OL play. The sudden drop off makes me think Miles was coaching the OL up more than we thought.

correction: our OL took a serious step backwards when Pocic and Boutte left and Teuhuma screwed up and had to leave. we are now faced with the REALITY of what many experts have said for a few years now about Les Miles OL recruiting, from Stud forward. he recruited Guards only and he recruited for his style of offense only. it's going to take a little time to get over that.

the fact that the "step backwards" is appearant only after O took over for you is amazing to me. methinks you have an agenda. O inherited a lot of good young players but the OL is a major project and effects the entire offense.

Les never had trouble with his guards pulling while his rbs broke school records.

Now our guard play is shite.

What about 2012? Faulk out for season, lonergan missed games with back spasms, Alex Hurst left the team. One other guy quit football all together before the season started.

True frosh vadal Alexander had to start, and Josh D was the answer at LT. Yet LSU still could run the damn ball.

Lmfao only when they don't perform are they his players right? I guess the 07 National Title belongs to Nick Saban too or do you flip flop depending on what fits your narrative on that issue too? I've never seen more double standard takes and talking out of both sides of your mouth before in my life than I have from these anti-O fans if you wanna call them fans.

LMFAO, so when they do perform it's Ed Orgeron right? When they shite the bed, Les left him with a shitty roster.

Double standard is from you and the O dick suckers.

Clapp is struggling bad at Center but is a good Guard.
Where is Coach O and Grimes playing him.

At this point I would try Cush at Center and move Clapp back to Guard.

This might give us a more effective Guard Center Guard combination for this season.

We would still be below average at Tackle but it might help.

Gentleman let's keep it civil.

The one thing a coach can't teach its size and with that comes strength to a degree. What infuriates me is to see something that is coachable, technique, clearly unattained.

Certainly in All American Guard has been taught and knows good technique. So why now do we see apparent lack of good technique. Are the current staff teaching some odd counter technique?

I honestly don't have an answer other than what Canada wants from them, they aren't grasping. They either need personnel change, or he's got to make it work with the guys he has.

Like another poster noted, it looks at times they are going to set up for a screen. As if they have the wrong blocking scheme for the play that is actually called. Or just don't understand it at all.
