If we weren't the only real tigers with the only real tiger mascot then hindsidght being 20/20 yeah something different maybe but since we are the best no need to regret.

I think we can all agree that the opportunity to have a quality mascot is what gives us a want to be a Tiger.

I like the Gators name/mascot for sure but I like the history behind the LSU Tiger name.

If it weren't taken and we couldn't be the Tigers we would certainly be the Gators.

I should know this - I'm sure I have heard it or read it - but, why the name "Mike". Don't get me wrong - it is perfect. Just wondering about the origin of the name.

I fear one day the NAACP will catch wind of this and demand that we change our mascot to some non-racist one.

Shhhh...we gotta keep this hush-hush!

The thing is we aren't the tigers. We are the FIGHTING tigers, named after the famous civil war unit. So no, id rather stay the fighting tigers than the tigers or gators.

As long as Mike is around, I can't see any other team having a live majestic mascot like ours. Some things in life don't need a change or a facelift!

Named after Mike Chambers, the first mascot trainer in the 1930's. I believe the first tiger was called "Lil Eat 'Em Up." And I think there was another name for Mike I - 'Sheik' I believe?

Named after the LSU trainer who was responsible for bringing Mike I to LSU.

Assuming UF or no other major program was "The Gators", I would not mind. As others have mentioned, our "Tigers" were also warriors, and not just a commonly picked sports mascot (Lions and Tigers and Bears, oh my).

As for other mascots I might pick, if not Tigers (or Gators), the Louisiana Curs (or Louisiana Leopard Dogs).

Pelicans would be fitting with the theme, the state seal, etc., but is a little lame.

Mike I (1936–1956)
Born on October 10, 1935, the first Mike was purchased from the Little Rock Zoo with money raised by collecting 25 cents from each LSU student for a total of $750. Originally named Sheik, the new mascot was renamed in honor of Mike Chambers, LSU's athletic trainer at the time, who was the person most responsible for bringing him to the school. Mike assumed his duties as the living symbol of LSU only three days after arriving on campus on October 21, 1936.
