This is herd mentality at its finest. You were told these guys would be studs this year and are still hanging on to that because you do what your told. (good boy )
So what are you doing with Mayers? Schmidt, as a freshman with 19 college innings pitched has been better than Mayers, a junior with 150+ college innings pitched.

If what Notbilly said is true then according to you 158 free passes in 156 innings is a result of good mechanics….makes sense. Apparently throwing ball 4 hard is a good thing. Who knew?
Throwing a baseball 100 miles per hour takes good mechanics. That is what I said. I am aware the guy is lacking control. I am not sure where the disconnect is? My OP says I want him to figure something out because he throws 100 miles per fxckin hour basically from right behind his head and would be a hell of a tool in the pen down the stretch.

I'm seeing the stuff be effective when it is in the zone. We have seen Schmidt's stuff when it is in the zone. From the looks of it, it is currently very hittable.

If Nolan Ryan had bad mechanics would he throw 100 mph?

So did Kade Anderson's at points last year.

I think I shouldn’t have said “horrific” when describing Mayer’s mechanics earlier. I would say you can have some problems with your mechanics and still throw hard…yes.

I can see where you’re coming from on that. I just can’t imagine taking a guy that has built up to that velo and completely overhaul his mechanics. Small tweaks are good and are essential to development. He needs something to click for sure

There was a pitcher a few decades ago named Carlos Zambrano who was throwing 102 in the minors…but couldn’t hit the broad side of a barn. The Cubs worked on his mechanics and while he threw closer to 96 ish..he became a very good pitcher

Mayers is a guy you bring in with 2 & 3 occupied and 2 outs. Need a K but a walk won't kill you. That's it.

I expect him to struggle all year and then pitch 6 innings of no hit, no walk ball in the sec tourney. Then will walk first two batters on eight pitches in the regional and never pitch again.

Which it is maybe half the time he throws a pitch.

He has good mechanics in regards to throwing a baseball hard. He has terrible mechanics when it comes to pitching. No pitching coach in America would look at his stat line and say he has good mechanics.
Starting a midweek game at this point in his career isn’t going to magically fix 12 years of bad mechanics. He needs to get an inning, do good, and earn another inning and keep putting in work with Yeski between games.

So do we start calling him “Nuke” or “Meat”?

Would love if he could get it going for us.

we paid a lot of money for such little production for him

LSU fans are very irrational when it comes to players that went to high school within an hour of BR.
But hey, let Chris stanfield go 0-4 or Braswell make an error or Cade Arrambide drop a few pitches and it’s the end of the world.

What part of can’t throw strikes consistently at all after 3 years of experience can’t you understand? I don’t care how All American he was at Nicholls he still can’t throw strikes for crap.
The dude is what he is at this point and that is a completely unreliable pitcher in any big time situation. He’s good for midweek games or weekend games when LSU is up by 10 runs or so.

You got any more of that herd mentality lying around???
Posted on 4/8/25 at 10:39 pm to FredbullTN
Going into tonight, Schmidt was still a project. A work in progress. Somebody you could throw out there in a low stress situation to hopefully “eat up innings”. The consensus that he was anything more than that (before tonight) was strictly based off what they told us about him, and high school production. So yea, herd mentality, going with the masses. Living on hype alone.
Now before you try and twist this into something I didn’t say, he had a hell of a showing tonight. The product he put out tonight is worthy of having more confidence in him in higher leverage spots. I still want to see this on a weekend but he took advantage of an opportunity tonight and that’s what high level ball players do. Props to Schmidt.
Still want to see Mayers shine, I don’t understand the hate around that.

Every pitcher in college baseball is a project. That’s why they are in college. Tonight showed exactly what Schmidt can be when he has a feel for his curveball. I don’t know how many innings he has in his young career but it’s probably 10% of what Mayers has under his belt.
Throwing him out there and expecting it to click is just foolish. He hasn’t shown that he can consistently throw strikes in over 150 innings. It would be a little different if he were a true freshman getting use to college ball. It’s obvious at this point that he isn’t showing the command in practice that gives CJJ enough confidence in him.
There probably isn’t a poster on here with the exception of Burreauxxx that doesn’t want to see all LSU players shine. But expecting a guy to just flip a switch and be something he isn’t after 3 years is not realistic. Like someone else said. Throwing him out there and letting him figure it out is a great way to lose a midweek game
