No. I am balanced and not prone to wild swings in emotion. I was lukewarm on the hire but thought he did OK in 05 and 06 (given the schedule). 2007 was a special year but the Ws and Ls were more about the players than Les (I never bought into the whole "Lesticles" thing). I gave him a pass in 08 due to RP. I was disappointed in 2009.

But I also look at our roster and realize we are loaded. I realize that Florida will be inexperienced. I realize that Ole Miss and Tennessee will be down and that Bama has to come here. Bama will be good but overrated (lose too much on defense) and winning in 2009 will affect their complacency (see, LSU 2004).

I think Les Miles got too much credit in 2007 and is taking too much blame in 2009.

I think the LSU fan base is INSANE right now (due to a disappointing 2009 year plus Alabama catching lightning in a bottle).

So right now Miles has about a 20% approval rating. When we win next year, half of the 80% will hop on the bandwagon like idiotic little lemmings who lost their manic/depressive prescriptions and the other half will claim Les is just lucky that Florida was so young, that Bama was complacent, etc. because they are too stubborn to believe that their worldview was exaggerated.

I wonder which camp you will fall in Mr. Softy--stubborn and bitter, or bipolar. I'll have to keep an eye on your progress next fall!

There won't be any "bandwagon" to jump back on, cause most of us were never "off" to begin with. Just because we don't think Les Miles is the right coach for LSU does not mean we are not fans, in fact, it might even be harder to be a fan of your favorite team and still not like the coach.

If, and it's a big IF, he manages to win big next year it won't change my view of him as a coach much at all. He simply isn't a great football coach.

Good post and true. I'm lukewarm on Miles, too. But I would be more than happy for him to stay if he can keep LSU in contention. And I don't want to see him fail the way some people do just to expedite his being replaced because that would mean LSU would have to suck for a year or two at a minimum... and then it's a gamble of who would be available to be the new coach, and LSU might end up sucking for even longer. It is regrettable that a vocal, but growing minority are so intent on spewing poison because it doesn't help.

I respect Tiger_n_ATL. I think he is a good poster who adds a lot to this board and I enjoy reading his posts along with some others. So I say this with all respect...

A great football coach (in college) is someone who recruits well and wins. There is no other measure of greatness but wins. We all acknowledge Saban's greatness because he has won. When he went 7-6 in 2007, he didn't lose his greatness.

That's the key on Miles. He's had two ho-hum years. He's also won two BCS bowl games, an SEC title and a national championship. So anyone saying he's a bad coach is silly/deluded. Conversely, anyone calling him "great" at this point is nuts too.

But if he wins in 2010 with a veteran QB, favorable schedule and a bevvy of future NFL players on the roster, I will enjoy watching the reaction of this board. And I am telling you that half of the anti-Miles people will be buying "Fear the Hat" shirts and the other half will join the Maximus "He's Just Lucky" fan-club.

Yes, you are all that predictable.

epbart! There is at least one other sane, long-term view kind of person on that Rant! Hope for humanity. Someone who doesn't root against his coach or dog him with hyperbole! I'm so happy! And drunk...very, very drunk in advance of the Saints game.

It is absurd.

But, unfortunately, it's the situation.

Unless, of course, you think you can figure out a way to raise the money, with the political atmosphere as it is.

I am trying to stay as positive as I can considering the circumstances. There are a few positives, and it's a long ways until next September.

I'd suggest you look for a few of them, too. And while you're at it, don't forget, we'll have the same HC, OC, and QB next year. Don't expect different results doing the same things.

Same as I am now - disillusioned that the administration was dumb enough to ratify the current contract for Miles.

Even if we win the SEC next year?

Seriously?

Yes. Unless some spirit of coaches past takes over Miles' body and mind or the Head Coaches for Alabama, Florida, Arkansas, and Ole Miss get beer trucked, then I am confident 2010 and beyond is going to be a repeat of 2008 and 2009 - the new normal.

Miles will never dominate Saban.

Miles, for all intents-and-purposes, should be 3-0 against the Great Saban.

you're right.

Saban certainly hasn't dominated Miles. He needed overtime in '08 and caught some breaks this year to finally take the lead in the 4th quarter. Bama under Saban has become good, but is far from unbeatable.

I have hope for next season.
