Too bad he couldn't stick around and win a national title like Saban did.
Arnsparger left for an AD job at UoF, which noone would blame him for considering his age at the time and the location of the job. Until you know a little about him, then please keep your mouth shut.
Paul Dietzel left after 3 seasons where he lost only 2 games out of 30. What do you have to say about him? He was better than Saban and Miles.
He actually has players in the NFL and College HoF.

The man has won consistently in light of some of the bone headed things that have happened on the field. These things made me have my doubts. However, i see his recruiting abilities, his clean program, the coaching and player respect. But what capped it for me was him turning down Michigan twice. That is amazing in an age where the landscape of college coaching has changed to where the winning coach is so coveted that universities are opening the check books...coaches become hired hands never putting down roots like 20 years ago. Les is old school and wins, so i guess i am officially aboard the LES train. He gets my respect for sticking around after all the shite that has gone around in the last couple of years.

And your point is what? It is irrelevant that you mention this, but let's play what if. He was 60 when he left LSU for an AD job at UoF. In tht job he fired Galen Hall and Hired Steve Spurrier. You know the rest of the story about that.
That 87-88 LSU Team was so so well coached that even Mike Archer took them to 10-1-1. Chould have played for a NC in the BCS era.
You don't have to think this guy is a great DC. He only took 4 teams to teh SB as the DC. One of which was San Diego which was always horrible on D.

Gosh, you say that like LSU had no football history of winning before NS came to BR.
LSU had like the 12th or 13th most wins in NCAA history and was 2 yrs removed from winning 3 straight bowl games before NS signed on with LSU.
I'm not knocking NS cause he is a fine coach football coach, but he didn't build LSU. imo
Do you honestly believe LSU has ever had the respect it has now in CFB? Back in the 80's I remember having some good teams....70's I don't remember but I doubt we have ever been a consistent top 10 team.
At the most popular time in CFB and arguably the most competitive time LSU is at an elite status. Please show me an era that can match the last 10 years of LSU football. Why is this so hard to comprehend?

uh. Please go back and do a little research. There is no doubt that the SEC was competitive in those days. Ole Miss and LSU played for the NC in 59 for example. Otherwise LSU repeats.
58-67 Is VERY comparable regardless of where the team ended the final "ranking" in those days.
Here is the list of Bowl games. With the exception of the Bluebonnet bowl of 63 and LSU not making a bowl in 60, LSU was in a major bowl comparable to a BCS bowl game EVERY year.
1958 Sugar Bowl (Title Game) LSU 7 Clemson 0 3-4-1
1959 Sugar Bowl Ole Miss 21 LSU 0 3-5-1
1961 Orange Bowl LSU 25 Colorado 7 4-5-1
1962 Cotton Bowl Classic LSU 13 Texas 0 5-5-1
1963 Bluebonnet Bowl Baylor 14 LSU 7 5-6-1
1964 Sugar Bowl LSU 13 Syracuse 10 6-6-1
1965 Cotton Bowl Classic LSU 14 Arkansas 7 7-6-1
1967 Sugar Bowl LSU 20 Wyoming 14 8-6-1
1968 Peach Bowl LSU 31 Florida State 27 9-6-1
1970 Orange Bowl

uh please try to comprehend that CFB is at a completely different level today then it was 50 years ago. Far more competitive now then it was back then.
So in your opinion LSU garnered more respect as an elite program in the 60's compared to now?

Saban thinks he is better than everyone...not just coonasses. And for the record all the ones picking Miles over Saban as LSU's best coach could Miles have done what Saban did? Taking a loser to a powerhouse. Not to belittle Miles but sustaining a program is easier than building one.

Let him win another National Championship before you tag him as the best ever. He's great don't get me wrong, but we've had a lot of great coaches.

Sure he did, but HE LEFT. Would he have won as many games as Les has since then?
Because he took another job makes him a bad coach? That is straight up dumb. Had he stayed I say we would have 3 NC since 03. JMO

My main point to you is not that SEC or LSU football is not an all time high in excellence, but that LSU football had some mighty good periods long before either Nick or Les dropped into BR and neither one of them can therefore claim to be the builder of LSU football. imo
As another poster noted, Fl. St was made/built by BB but I don't think we can apply that honor to Nick.
Not trying to knock Nick's performance or worth as a college football coach, but I just don't see him as the builder of LSU football.

I think with a little rewording of the original message, it becomes very easy-
Les is the best coach that LSU has ever had, that hasn't left LSU for something "better"
Saban left. Dietzel left. Of national championship coaches, that leaves only Les as a guy who's rebuffed serious offers to stay here.

Cholly Mac was a great coach, but just could not beat the Bear. He beat all of the rest on a consistent basis. CPD was probably the best even though it was over a short time much like Saban. Now that Les has a SEVEN YEAR contract with a huge buy out he will get the opportunity to be the best ever at LSU and will have a long time record WITH SEVERAL NC'S much like the Bear at UA.

I agree that they had some good years in short stretches but as long as I can remember LSU was percieved as a team that had subpar talent but played with tenacity. Now we have superior talent and are 2-3 deep at most positions....LSU has never been this deep. I know now I am going to hear about the chinese bandits etc but it still doesn't compare to what we have now.

I agree...FSU was a perennial loser prior to BB LSU wasn't.

The reason we can't agree is we have different definitons for building a program. LSU has had success and I have never disputed that....by built I only mean he has taking us to a level that I have never seen in my 30+ years as an LSU fan.
Posted on 2/14/11 at 11:56 am to Topwater Trout
I'll put it this way....before he leaves, Miles will be considered the best coach in LSU history.

LSU had a bad decade...but we were still a top 15 program historically before Saban got here. Saban can also thank Dinardo for alot of success. And check out the coaching records at OSU before Miles got there before you deem him incapable of building up a program.

so are you suggesting Gundy is a better coach than Miles? He has improved OSU since Les left.
Had LSU been as good as they have been the last decade over the last 30 years we would be top 3 all time

he also plays in the big 12. and he's never beaten OU and only beat UT once...last year

fortunately...no school in the history of college football has ever done that...and never will
