That is my point and I also don't see LSU being the powerhouse it is today if Les had been the one to come in after Dinardo. Does anyone believe that w/o Saban coming to LSU we would have won 2 national titles last decade?
Did Saban create a "powerhouse" when he was at Michigan State?
No.
Let's try to compare apples to apples here...
Nick Saban at MSU:
34-24-1 (58%), 2-3 vs Mich.
Les Miles at OSU:
28-21 (57%), 2-2 vs Ok.
MSU had gone 22-34-1 (39%) in 5 years prior to Saban's arrival, and had shared one B10 title. This includes 5 vacated wins as losses due to violations (48% with vacated wins as Ws).
OSU had gone 26-30 (46%) in the 5 years prior to Miles' arrival, with no championships.
Nick Saban at LSU:
48-16 (75%), 2-0 in SECCG, 1 BCSNC
Les Miles at LSU:
62-17 (78%), 1-1 in SECCG, 1 BCSNC
I'd have to say that the two are pretty damn close, so yes, I would conclude that Miles could have built a powerhouse at LSU given the same conditions Saban met when he arrived at LSU.
Side note:
Dinardo ate grass during games in Tiger Stadium as well.

Best at what? The best coach over his entire tenure? Then yes. Best Coach for one season? no Saban 2003

Thats not true - he lost to UF in 2003 - remember our only loss???

What is the point of continuously defending the previous head coach who now coaches our biggest rival? I guess I never will understand why some lsu fans will defend Saban at all costs but continuously trash on the success of the current coach and downgrade any accomplishments. Why would an lsu fan do this?
The topic is who is the best coach LSU has ever had. My opinion is Saban based on what he did for LSU....built up facilities and won first National title in 45 years. I don't know Cholly Mac or Dietzel so can't include them in the discussion so basically my decision is based on three coaches Arnsbarger, Saban, and Miles....I choose Saban. It is not a knock on Miles and his success at LSU. The majority of people who know football and are not LSU fans would pick Saban as LSU's best coach ever.
I will never understand how any TRUE tiger fan can not defend Saban after all he did for LSU. I was pissed when he left but the man still did alot for LSU.

i might put the '05 season right up there....but the '03 season obviously tops it because of the hardware.

the best coach in the history of the football program is paul dietzel.
the first coach to lock down the state for recruiting.
that 58 team was great. and the 59 team was even better. we we're about a foot short (2 point conversion against tenn) of being back to back ncs.
and even more talent coming in after. if he'd stayed his whole time here, we might be able to claim as many worthless ncs as bama does.

11-2 last year, every thing considered, is a damn good year. Saban went 9-4 in 04 with a similar team.
Miles got the most "Miles" out of his team last year.

Saban did it....Miles hasn't. That is a fact.
Could Miles have done it? maybe.
If you polled all CFB fans and AD's, experts etc who they would hire to rebuild a program who do you think would win the poll Miles or Saban?

all i'll say to that is perception is not neccessarily reality.

Saban is a great coach...nobody is denying that. But Saban can thank Dinardo and Louisiana high schools for alot of his success at LSU

and les can thank saban.
every new coach wins in the first 2 years with someone else's players. i never understood that argument.

its harder to maintain than to bring a program to excellence... just my 2 cents

One thing more about baby bear he did not build Bama or LSU IMO into powerhouses. What he did is wake sleeping giants into their potential. Bama has been Bama for years and LSU on a smaller scale also had good tradition. Now I am not saying he isn't a great coach but I think he gets to damn much credit for getting these two programs back on track. To me building a program is doing what Bobby Bowden did at FSU and Howard Schellenbeger did at the U. Same thing with Mack Brown or Pete Carrol they didn't build those programs they were built way before they got there.

This thread was not started to compare Les with Nick.If we look down the road for the next SEVEN years will Les have the best record EVER at LSU? His strong year in 2010 says YES.
Posted on 2/11/11 at 11:03 am to bearcat78
I hear you bearcat, but the post stated best coach. And I think even if Miles averages 10 wins a year wins a couple more SEC titles and NC some people here will still say Nick Saban is a better coach.

I'm really glad someone brought this up.
I'm tired of hearing about what a miserable pile of shite LSU was when Saban got here.
The truth is that LSU has NEVER been the miserable pile of shite so many want to believe it was.
Furthermore, Saban did NOT build all of the football facilities LSU now enjoys. When he arrived on campus there was a brand new admin building as well as the Academic Center for Student-Athletes and a full size indoor practice facility.
Yes, Saban requested and got more facilities and upgrades to existing facilities, his contribution to LSU is great, but he didn't invent LSU football.

THis, look at the coaching job done by Hal Hunter.
He( HC ) coached one game. We had lots of talent. Some seem to forget.
