It's a simple consulting gig
I hired an 80-something atty as a consultant. Had him on a conference call with a state regulator in a business dispute about state regs. The state guy said, "I know this law and what you are proposing was not in the intent of the law". My 80-something guy said (very politely), "I respectfully disagree sir, I wrote that law, and the intent was clearly to include what my client proposes." (Before the call I had no idea the guy wrote the law)

I can't remember hiring a highly experienced consultant who didn't pay for himself 10 times over - the young Turk consultants are another story.

Bunch of haters in here who think it can't help to have some wisdom added to the program.

The guy hasn't been football employed since 2010, and hasn't been a coach since 04. Touting this as an automatically bad move is JUST as bad as touting it as an automatic good idea.

There's no evidence that this model, or Robinson himself, are worthwhile in any form. You think he would've have been hired if he were seen as valuable?

Urban Meyer quote:
quote:

“To this day, everything in our program came from Earle Bruce or Lou Holtz,” Meyer said. “I’ve been lucky. A lot of times, guys don’t get that. We’ll get a coach that is not used to the kind of attention to detail that we have, and it’s great to see them learn.”

Some coaches are humble enough to learn from their elders and some are not.

O is approaching 60, shouldn't he be an elder by now?

Pretty sure Robinson is older.

Let me guess when you stopped taking advice from your elders... 17? 13? Younger?

Did O need to hire him just to get advice?

Probably not if he wanted intel on a Cal recruit or two. If O wanted something more encompassing, then he needs to pay the man a little something.

Well if Saban did it and got his current results along with this, then wouldn't that prove that it were a smart thing to do?

And doesn't the fact that Saban and Dabo NOT do this and get the best results in college football prove that this isn't probably necessary? Or the very least make one pause before celebrating this as a brilliant and necessary move?

I'm sure there's been a lot of hand-wringing about his age but all I want to say is if he is going to be here than this year is a true disappointment if we don't see at least one student body right called

Urban Meyer followed his aging mentors, and had the highest W/L percentage in modern Div 1 football when he retired.

but that hasn’t stopped anyone from acting like LSU hired a coyote to watch the hen house

To be fair, Orgeron hasn’t exactly killed it with his hires at LSU.

He hired Canada without so much as a formal vetting/interviewing process and subsequently gave him $1.7mil to not coach at LSU.

He hired Ensminger to replace Canada, after Ensminger publicly stated he didn’t want the job.

He hired Pete Jenkins, who could not, and did not want to, recruit before replacing him with a 20-something grad assistant with no formal coaching experience.

He hired Mickey Joseph to coach receivers, which turned into hiring Jerry’s Sullivan as a consultant to teach Joseph how to coach receivers which turned into moving a 73 year old Sullivan into a $500,000/year receivers coach who did not recruit.

Also, let’s not forget that Orgeron hired Derek Ponamsky, to be his top administrative assistant.

Anyone who doesn’t understand skepticism aimed at O’s hires are blindly ignoring a three year shite show of underwhelming-to-horrible hires.

How many Saban hires have hit the road lately?

Does anyone believe Sarkisian is a good hire?

During USC’s run from 2000-2006, how many of Pete Caroll’s Assistants hit the road? Almost all of them, because they were considered excellent coaches and offered better positions.

Not a single one of Orgeron’s hires have been plucked away. I can only guess as to why.

Not unlike the advice Will Wade gets from his mental guru that he has on retainer.

I know you don’t like Will, but comparing this hire to having a sports psychologist work with your team is a bit of a stretch.
