The total yardage stat is pretty meaningless in College as opposed to NFL.

You have many teams running the spread putting up 500 yards a week but giving up 500 as well.

Agreed, but the OP mentioned the total yardage stat which is even less reliable when some teams have played more games than others. I just linked the YPG because I thought it was a better indication. It is still misleading without looking at other stats though.

These offensive stats are ery misleading for a number of reasons, many of which have already been mentioned.

Ine that has not been mentioned yet is that we have had a huge lead in all but one game and have essentially shut it down early in the second half. These offensive numbers have been generated with a very vanilla offense because Miles doesn't like to run it up, and he doesn't like to show anything offensively that he doesn't have to.

Last season almost every game was close and we were trying our best to generate offense over the entire game...we just couldn't do it.

Our games this year have been televised, in case you were wondering.

The yardage stats are off because we have someawesome starting field position this year due to the awesome D

as of a few games ago the starting field position was worse this year than last, the low yardage is mainly due to fewer penalties and turnovers

I think another thing that has kept our total offense low has been the hit or miss nature of it this year. When we start moving the chains during a drive, we usually go all the way. Otherwise, its usually a 3-and-out. Honestly, in most games, when we got a 1st down, we went all the way down the field and scored. We get 91 yards, 82 yards, 3 yards, 5 yards

Red Zone TD scoring efficiency percentage is 80% - 3rd in the nation. (Top 3 are very close though)

Which translates into - 4 out of 5 times we get a TD in the red zone.

What happens the rest of the time

Total efficiency is 37/38 - 97% +

Which means when there is no TD - a FG is almost a given.

What does this really mean you ask?

Simple - if the LSU O is on the 20 yard line - the best you can hope is 1/5 times to restrict them to a FG - the other times, you save yourself the effort and give them the TD.

I think our offense is better, the yardage stats just don't show it. We turn the ball over less, our defense is stout, and we haven't really had to do anything flashy. I think when the time comes our offense can really move the ball.

Also, I dont know what the stat is, but our starting field position has to be better.... with this Def. and our punting team, it puts the numbers in our favor big time.. Pinning the opposing team deep, holding them and getting the ball back in good field position improves our chances to score dramatically... It will be a big advantage against Bama.

ETA: #86 in YPG in 2010

This has little to do with the offense for several reasons, but these in particular:

Our Defense gives us the ball in great field position quite often.

We have a punter that kicks it inside the 10 consistently on the reg.

There is no old adage that says the passing game opens the running game. That concept came into play with spread offense which we don't really run.

The old adage is the running game opens the passing game which is exactly what LSU's offense does. Most big plays come from play action for a reason. Also I give all the credit to Kragthorpe. There is the reason why this offense looks like day compare to night.

Absolutely. Krags has turned the offense around.

Lee is damn efficient.

Lee is having a fine season, but all of our QB's have played pretty good and that speaks to Krag/coaching staff/QBs/team.

The plays are getting in much more timely and I doubt we see LSU only being able to get off one sane play in the final 32 secs again.

Bama game will be decided by our OL. Can we continue to pass block as we have and open some holes for our backs.
