Ex Vol player Dwayne Goodrich got 15 years and he even came back to the scene.
He served 8 years. He also killed two people, and no he didn't come back to the scene.
quote:
*"OK, obviously it was Jan. 13, 2003. It was about two weeks after the season. I was at the house with two cousins. We were sitting around the house, playing PlayStation. We decided to head to a few restaurants and a few clubs after that. *
"So I went out, it was a typical night – about 9 or 10 of us going out. I had about two drinks that night. At about midnight, I decided to stop drinking because I knew I had to go home. So about 2:30, I'm heading up I-35 and another accident took place in front of me. And I was following behind an SUV and when she swerved to the right, I slammed on my breaks and that's when I finally first saw the car that was stalled in the road. And I couldn't go to the right because there was an 18-wheeler still coming by so I went to the left. *
"It was lane four and five and the car was titled sideways in lane four and five. And then when I went there and that's where the three gentlemen were – Demont Matthews, Joseph Wood and Shuki Josef. And Shuki Josef actually had his leg leaning out the car. And I struck all three of them. Demont Matthews died instantly. Joseph Wood (died) on the way to the hospital and Shuki Josef broke a leg. ... And I just left the scene. *
"Leaving the scene, I just panicked. Obviously, I made a selfish decision. I saw everything that I had worked for just flash in my face. I had all these thoughts in my head about 'just get to a safe place' and just not knowing how to handle the situation." *
When Goodrich got home, he said he was in a daze and couldn't grasp what had happened. His next call was to his closest friend.
"I called my mom. At this point it was about 3 in the morning and I told my mom and she said, 'Son have you been drinking?' I said, 'Yes, ma'am, I had a few drinks.' And that's when she said we have to start the process of getting you a lawyer and turning yourself in."
Initially, Goodrich told the police he thought he had only struck debris with his BMW Sudan. But deep down, he knew it was much worse.
"I think that at the time I didn't want to realize what had happened," Goodrich recalled. "I don't want to say downplay what happened, but in my mind I couldn't just bring my mind to say I knew that I actually hit somebody, so that's what I tried to tell myself, 'Nah, it wasn't that,' so when I initially talked to the police I told them it was debris or something like that. Just not knowing how to deal with that."
With Goodrich not turning himself in until the next day, it could never be proven if he was legally drunk

Is the fact that it also involves hit and run affect the amount of time he could receive?
leaving the scene would be a separate charge.
one that likely carries no bail on its own.

How was he identified? Was there a camera on that highway that was able to read his license plate?

if anyone could be a Marine, we wouldn’t be the Marines…
um, I don't think he's saying just anyone can be a marine.
he's saying causing a death is causing a death.
and asking if the amount of bail should changed based on who the victim is.

followed good advice
Good advice would be to take that 150k bail money and go to South America.

I remembered this case from a decade ago in the bayou area.
In May of 2013, South Terrebonne Graduate Katelyn Marie Duplantis got onto a golf cart and was driving on the road in Bourg after allegedly drinking at a graduation party. I don't think the golf cart was involved in the physical crash, but a driver swerved to miss the golf cart that was on Highway 24 and hit a tree. The driver died a few weeks later. Duplantis pled guilty to vehicular homicide in January of 2014.
She was sentenced to no jail time but was sentenced to 3 years probation and 5 years of a suspended sentence.
That was another case of where a young person that had the rest of their life in front of them and for one reason or another made a stupid decision that will affect them for the rest of their life.
Even though the case was in Terrebonne Parish, the Lafourche Parish District Attorney's Office was asked to take over the case as the Duplantis family had some connections to someone in the Terrebonne Parish District Attorney's Office.
I say this because, every year since 2003 or 2004, the Lafourche Parish District Attorney's office has presented a program called The Domino Effect. It is presented to each of 4 high schools in the parish right around prom season.
A year or two after the plea, I can recall attending one of the Domino Programs where Duplantis was the guest speaker and spoke to the students at one of the high schools about what happened to her and how she managed to piece her life back together and was attending school, and how she now has a criminal record.
I could see a similar plea of no jail time/probation/suspended sentence and community service and some sort of financial settlement with the parties involved.
The big question will be is there is will a team take a chance on someone that if they involved in a criminal matter not only will they face the charges on the new crime, they are headed right to jail for the probation and suspended sentence from the charges in the crash.
Of course you also have the race card, Duplantis was a white girl and her familiy was some what connected. Lacy could get the book thrown at him.
