LSU > Tech. It's admission standards are higher, LSU's faculty are much more prestigious , LSU offers much more research opportunities, LSU has a much more diverse student population (students from all of the world), the list goes on and on...

you are right on all counts. As much pride as I have in my education, there is no data to support Tech's academics in any area, except maybe engineering. Tech had the first biomedical engineering program in the country, and currently has the first (and only) ABET accredited nanosystems engineering program. Also, the amount and quality of research going on here is incredible. Tech is ranked #3 in the country in nanosystems development and commercialization, have one of the best biomedical facilities in the country, and just broke ground on a $40 million research park. From my point of view it's not that Tech's academics are necessarily better, but that we seem to do more with what little resources we have (compared to LSU).
And it's not just the tech message boards that are full of delusional folks... it's rampant up here with most of the locals, though probably about 1/2 to 3/4 of the students support LSU sports, a good percentage more than they support Tech.

Not sure, but the man who started Squire Creek has a good bit of dough.

The linked board that brings up petroleum engineering is stupid because there are very few programs in the country anyways
I don't think Tech has a petroleum engineering program? I think LSU, Texas A&M, Texas, and UL-L might be the only schools to have them (not positive on that though...).

I would disagree with the research opportunities and the diverse student population. LSU may have more research opportunities, but that is only because it is larger, per person I would say Tech has more research opportunities, and it's only growing. We have students from all 50 states and over 80 countries.
Also, we have some pretty prestigious faculty at tech too, though I don't know how it compares to LSU.

I'm not talking strictly about engineering though. I'm going to be honest with you, I know SMU isn't the likes of the Ivy League, Stanford, MIT, UVA, etc...but it is fairly well respected (especially in the South). I found LSU to be much more "challenging" than SMU. I'm not going to necessarily say it was more difficult, but I think the professors demand more and require you to put more effort into your work. That's just my opinion though.

Not saying LSU's is bad, but yeah, there are better

In reality, it all boils down to what degree your are pursuing.

I'm glad you're bragging on Tech's engineering, but don't use "we" when referring to yourself and Tech if you're going to be an LSU fan. The majority of the student body is NOT full of "LSU>Tech" fans as far as I've seen, and times are swinging the student body much more heavily into Tech athletics than they ever have been.

Those publications are meaningless. For every one like that, there are others out there (ex:Forbes and Princeton Review) that say differently.
ETA: I don't know if those exact publications have LSU ranked higher Tech or Tech higher than LSU, I was just using them as an example.

didn't tulane have to drop their engineering program?
Posted on 11/12/09 at 11:57 pm to Roberteaux
I think they have some programs there?

As far as Agriculture LSU > La. Tech
Posted on 11/12/09 at 11:59 pm to LSUbase13
To be honest Tech doesn't offer much outside of engineering. I mean the programs are there, but they don't get nearly the attention (financial, research, academic) that engineering (specifically biomed and nanosystems) get. I think Tech wants to be known as an engineering school though, so in that respect I think they are accomplishing their goal.

I totally agree. I was responding to the statement "is there a better engineering school than Lsu". And yeah, there are. Auburn has a great engineering program, but there are better. I don't really have a dog in the LSU vs LaTech fight. I know absolutely nothing about Tech.

+100000000000000000000000
I don't think Tech's Business school, Liberal Arts School, Architecture School, etc. are up to par with most. That said, I think they know who they are and what they want to pursue and I commend them for that.

From an OVERALL academic standpoint, LSU > La Tech. End of story.

I'm a tech fan... I just never changed the LSU fan thing next to my name. I'm rooting for blue and red this weekend. And i'm not saying the school is full of people who like LSU more, just saying there are plenty of people that don't mind supporting LSU sports along with Tech sports, and a few of those people that support LSU more than Tech.
