The Buffalo Bills have added another Pro Bowler to the team, but he’s not a player. Kevin Mawae, 8-time All Pro and Pro Bowl center, is working with the Bills coaching staff as one of the Bill Walsh NFL Minority Coaching Fellowship participants.

This isn’t the first coaching gig for Mawae. He interned with Vanderbilt University for a season and coached high school football in Tennessee for a season.

“For me, it’s really more about having an impact on the people I’m around, whatever level it is,” he said.

it doesnt matter if he has never coached...you either know the technique or you dont. it's very simple. he can recruit because of who he is and i know he has a great personality.

the surface, I don't know that I like hiring someone with zero coaching experience to coach up the most imporant unit on the field. Let's see how it all plays out. If he says the right things and Les/Cam are on board, I'm on board.
LSU just fired an o-line coach who never played in the NFL. Mawae played 16 years at the highest level. I would think that Mawae not only has better handle on technique than Stud but also the experience to go along with it.

Are people really trying to say that an 8-time NFL pro-bowler won't know how to teach kids proper technique?

If this guy's name was Tom Smith and not Kevin Mawae, the board would go crazy if we hired a guy with this thin of a resume. Nostalgia has a way of clouding reality.

Just because you know the technique and used it in your pro career doesn't mean you can effectively teach it, get the points across and get results. I'm not saying with 100% certainty that he won't be a good coach, but let's seek someone with a proven track record in D-1 or the NFL before we bring in Mawae to run the OL.

Les' main strength is as an OL coach anyways. I am sure that could offset some of KM's lack of coaching experience. That being said, I still like the Todd Washington hire.

Titans just went through this with Bruce Matthews. HOF tackle brought in as OL coach with little experience and whiffed. Fired this week.

Kevin Mawae is a sharp cat. If he wants to be a coach he will. There is no way this could be a bad hire.

Is it really that far-fetched? There's a chance that he could be a great teacher, but we don't know that. He doesn't have a track record and hasn't proven himself to be an effective offensive line coach. Being a great NFL player and being a great college coach are two completely different animals.

Yep, this is what the interview process is for. He's been in the film room so the staff knows if he has it or not. I have complete faith in Cam to make the right call.

That's trying to coach the best of the best. Big difference.

I agree 100%. I just don't understand how some people are SO certain that he would be a great hire. There is obviously a chance that he could be. There is also a chance he could be a bad hire. There are plenty of sharp dudes that were great players that have been horrendous coaches.
