Just to make this clear to everyone:
PRIOR pitching coach:
Coaching Experience
2007- LSU (assoc. head coach/pitching coach/recruiting coordinator
2004-06 Notre Dame (pitching coach)
2002-03 Stetson (pitching coach)
2000-01 Old Dominion (pitching coach)
1998-99 James Madison (pitching coach)
1997 George Washington (pitching coach)
And he was SUPRISE a pitcher growing up and in college!
Grewe's resume:
I dont know maybe he was the pitcher when he played T-Ball or something.

You know, Skip Bertman was a catcher and he called every pitch for LSU for 18 years

fair point,
Mike Leach agrees

Skip was the pitching coach???
I thought I was making the point that CALLING pitches DOES NOT make you a pitching coach.

thx catman but these people don't handle FACTS very well, they'd much rather just call someone an idiot or douchebag then deal w/ reality
Posted on 5/27/10 at 11:04 am to Catman88
many catchers become pitching coaches FWIW.

BTW you did know that Skip was Miami's pitching coach as well right?
Posted on 5/27/10 at 11:06 am to Catman88
It's common knowledge skip handled the pitchers, whomever was te actual "pitching coach" was that in title only
I'm not defending grewe's performance this year, but just because he didn't pitch doesn't mean he doesn't have an understanding about pitching. I'd be willing to give him another year, though it looks like he's leaving anyway

I have no problem with that.
However the problem is that his first job as pitching coach is at one of the top NCAA baseball programs.
Why should LSU be a learning ground for a coach rather than recruit a solid coach that learned elsewhere?

Its also common knowledge that skip mentored the LSU pitching coach at the time AND was the pitching coach at the UNIVERSITY OF MIAMI for SEVEN YEARS!

You do know that David Grewe was in his first year right and Coleman wasnt exactly struggling without him. Grewe has very very limted experience coaching pitchers prior to LSU.
He is really a hitting and fielding coach and main purpose is recruiting. I certainly do not attribute last years pitching staff to him but rather to the pitchers themselves. I honestly dont consider LSU to have a real pitching coach but rather a good recruiter that will bring in solid pitchers.
Dan Canevari was the pitching coach for LSU's greatest seasons and best pitchers (Mestepay, Ogea, Byrd, Ainsworth, Greene, Sirotka, Thompson, Coogan...). Any idea what he was doing before he was LSU's pitching coach? He was coaching high school. Grewe was the head coach as Michigan State.
And if you want to give Bertman all the credit for developing the pitchers under Canevari, he was also coaching high school before he was an assistant at Miami. Maybe we could give Miami's head coach at the time all that credit as well since he probably only hired Bertman because he was a buddy.

Dan Canevari was mentored by Skip.
Skip had 7 years experience as a pitching coach to teach him..
Who is teaching Grewe??
Seriously... HOW IS GREWE learning to be a pitching coach?
Skip learned from Ron Fraser!

Yea that's great and all but we're talking about 2010, NOT the early 90s

@ 3rd base this year too

Mainieri could be teaching him, he's coached and been with pitching coaches and pitchers for like 20 years.

Javi did great in that NC season as well. Never ran us out of any innings.

Too bad we don't have a real pitching coach to actually diagnose & fix these mechanical issues, not just one of PMs buddies
So lets go hire a pitching coach from a team who hasn't won and National Championship of late and can our present coach who has

Well that sounds like a great lineage to learn from.. 20 years of hearsay.
