Me too. I remember where I was when I heard the news and I knew that this was a bad omen. If only!

Had Rein not died, we avoid the feast or famine years of Stovall, the midnight train to Gainsville of Anrsbager and the three stooges after that. 20 years of pain and suffering would have been avoided.

It also explains where lou holtz's hatred of LSU comes from.

And the timing to land Saban & Miles when we did would likely not have happened either....it's all about timing.

Dinardo was not a stooge. Had he not gotten LSU back on it's feet this job wouldn't have been attractive enough to get a decent coach in December of 1999, much less Nick Saban.

Can you imagine a young Bill Cowher possibly getting one of his first coaching gigs at LSU under Rein. That one event effected so many coaches careers over the last 3 decades...crazy to think about what might have been.

What on earth happened to the plane? Did they ever find it in the Atlantic?

Debris was spotted, but the plane was never found.

I don't think he hates anyone. I think he just irrationally loves Notre Dame and anywhere else he's previously coached

rerouted east to avoid a strom, lost cabin pressure, rein and pilot died. the coast guard followed the plane until it ran out of gas and crashed in the atlantic ocean. the plane and bodies were never recovered

other interesting tidbits
quote:

In 1982, Rein's widow, Suzanne Kay, reached an out-of-court settlement for an undisclosed amount after filing a $10 million damage suit against a number of defendants, including the Cessna Aircraft Company, Cruse Aviation Inc., who serviced the plane, and Nichols Construction Corporation, who owned it.[4] Cessna later settled out of court with his widow for an undisclosed amount.
Out of respect, LSU paid for Rein's children's college educations at the universities of their choice. Former Ohio State coach Woody Hayes gave the eulogy at Rein's funeral in Niles, Ohio.
In 1980, Niles McKinley High School's famous Riverside Stadium was renamed "Bo Rein Memorial Stadium," in honor of one of Niles' greatest athletes and one of its most famous native sons.

Man, what might have been. This tragedy happened right before I started my freshman year at LSU.

it wasn't the best of times, but it really makes us appreciate what has happened to this program in the last 15 years. You young bucks don't know LSU football before Saban and are spoiled shitless

I remember being overjoyed when LSU hired Rein and the absolute shock when his plane went missing. My dad was a huge NC State fan having spent many years in that state while he was in the Marine Corps. We watched the Wolfpack at every opportunity (usually bowl games or the odd nationally televised out of conference matchup) so we knew what an outstanding coach he was. His death was unquestionably a catastrophic event in the history of LSU football. We would have been dominant for decades.

We have had 9 coaches since Charlie Mac.

9. Most of them are forgettable.

Bo Rein would be about 70 now. If Rein had lived and coached here, I doubt he'd have stayed until 2015. I think he'd have been so good that he'd have ended up in the No Fun League.

That being said, you don't know who'd have been coach when Saban and Miles came to be.

Very interesting and informative piece. I was a freshman in high school at the time and remember hearing about the accident. Didn't know much about him, but everyone was excited that LSU was about to get a special coach.

If they knew where it crashed, why did they never recover the bodies?
