Ok but that’s careers, I said it’s insane to claim he’s got a better “skill set”. They’re basically the same size, Deion is Faster with MLB allstar level hand eye coordination and even if Stingley gets to Deion’s level of corner skill and return skill Deion will have those 2 things above him so he’ll need to develop something in other areas to pass him. Which means right now, which is when we’re talking about it, he does not have a “better” skill set.
I agree with this. Surprisingly, the only thing nobody has mentioned in this thread is the fact that Prime himself has said on many occasions - he didn’t like to hit or be hit. He called it making a “business decision”. With that, Stingley is a very good tackler in space and I like his overall skill set better. If you want to look at corners, Revis, IMO was the best cover guy I’ve ever seen.

Sting may never come close to having the numbers to be the greatest because of what he showed as a KID playing corner in the SEC WEST.
I will not be surprised if teams stay away from his side of the field a vast percentage of the time for the next 2 seasons.
True, and I’d imagine if QBs start totally ignoring him, Pelini is gonna send him on some corner blitzes. He may be more disruptive behind the LOS than downfield this year. But I do think he’s good enough to bait some more confident QBs into making some mistakes, so I do think he’ll have a few picks, but I can’t imagine he’ll have as many as last year.

Because of this, I think Sting has the ability to be a much better DB than Sanders.
Sanders was always the best athlete on the field and he knew it, but I believe that hurt him from reaching the potential that he could have had.

seems pretty obvious
don't think he's good enough to equal or surpass Deion though.
Downvoted 2 to 1, but you are exactly right. Deion Sanders is in a class by himself. No one’s even close.

Sting is more athletic.
Not even close. Sanders WAAAYYY more athletic. Sanders and Bo Jackson are at the pinnacle. Stingley is on an elite level, and he’s tracking to be as good as Champ Bailey, Charles Woodson and Patrick Peterson.

Sorry, my mistake. Deion DIDN'T EVEN MAKE the interception, Bruce Pickens did at Dirty Bird 6-yd line. He then immediately lateraled to Deion, who ran 55 yds and WAS TACKLED in the open field at our 39-yard line by Bobby Hebert (prayers to him and his family on his Dad's passing) Article is in NY Times 12/4/92. So I seent 1/2 of what I thought I seent! I gave Deion too much credit. I was in opposite end zone and falsely assumed Deion had made the pick because I saw him on the return. Light your cigarette on that. Point is, Stingley is better.

“Sanders relied heavily on his speed to make plays, Sting is very fast but plays IMO with more Technique as a teenager than Sanders did as a full-grown man in the NFL.”
You must’ve never seen Deion Sanders play corner. There isn’t a scout or coach alive who would agree that Derek Stingley played with better technique last season than Deion in the NFL. Stingley went through a slump mid season where he was getting beat, you think college WRs would’ve done that to Deion as a Pro? Then you preface that by saying you think “teams will avoid Stingley” so you use a made up analysis coupled with basically a dream scenario and use that as your position. Let’s keep this thing focused on what is and fact ok? Do you know why people threw at Deion? He let guys open, he’d bait QBs into throwing at him so he could pick them lol. Seriously we’re in lockdown, go pop in the tape you’ll enjoy it.
I don't need to pop in a tape, I saw him live. Sanders could have been the best DB at any level. But once again IMO he was a pure speed corner. Many guys with a lot less speed than Sanders were and are just as good. Technique as a DB can make a world of difference.
That said Sanders God-given talent was the best. As an athlete, Sanders was top 10 in NFL history at any position.
However, if anyone has great God-given talent (Sting does) and great technique (Sting does in spades) that will make a better DB. You said.
(Do you know why people threw at Deion? He let guys open, he’d bait QBs into throwing at him.)
This kind of proves my point. He was and he knew he was the fastest guy on the field and when the ball went in the air his speed would take over.
This is exactly why he never had better than average technique.

quote:he did not want to hit or be hit. For that he is not in a class by himself as an overall football player. Revis was every bit as much of a lockdown corner and would tackle. Woodson was a damn good tackler. There are multiple facets of playing that position and like in Greedy’s case one of them can drop you down
Deion Sanders is in a class by himself. No one’s even close.

What do you mean by "athletic" - speed? agility? leaping? strength? coordination? tackling?
I doubt Sting will ever be faster than Deion. But the difference isn't that great.
If we're talking skills to play CB on a football field, the prudent thing would be to withhold judgement until Stingley is further along in his career.

Can't wait to see him on Devonte Smith again, especially since Smith got him on two big plays last year. Jeudy and Ruggs didn't do much that game but for a play here or there. Think both went pro so won't see either of them. Waddle will be back though.
I only mention Bama cause other than LSU they had a legit WR group.
