No think you may be missing the point. a reasonable person would look at all the times he sat players and it put LSU in a terrible position in 2H, not try to convince yourself he's right bc the one time he did it with game out of reach a 3rd foul was picked up (and at that point who cared; it was too late).

Did you actually watch the games? We were almost never out of reach in the first half of games. His 2-foul rule never caused us to get blown out in the first half.

Jones is not suited for coaching at this level

Your deflections aside, it also happens to be quite true.

This year's team needed a defensive stopper who could control the lane. Team's talent was not very deep, particularly without Hornsby. They were not good at stopping guys driving the middle. Opponents focused on getting Tigers in early foul trouble, and then game over.

Sometimes our players are so dumb that I'm honestly not sure I could trust them to not pick up that third foul. Poor Craig Vic though, the guy would get hacked on one end with no call and would turn around and pick up a quick foul for breathing on somebody. TQ and Ben were damn good at picking up those swipe and get out the way and one fouls

Exactly. Our players couldn't be trusted to not get the 3rd foul.

I've never understood the absolute rule he has and the fact that he can't make judgements based on the circumstances of the game.

It's fricking absurd. It's like zero tolerance in schools and suspending a third grader for bringing nail clippers. Zero tolerance takes all judgment out of certain situations when judgment is desperately needed. Johnny has a zero tolerance policy with his dumb-arse two foul and sit rule.

Good defense is coached. Just not by Jones.

Good defense is effort. Not coached. You can blame Jones on not recruiting guys with effort, but once they were at Lsu, that's on the players-it's about effort.

Zero tolerance would imply he never broke his rule. I just stated he broke his rule against A&M with Simmons.

Don't care. It took getting his arse handed to him in the first half to do so.

Why people continue to try and defend this I don't understand.
It's fine to have it as a basic plan, but to stick to it the way he does is full on retarded (1x in the last game doesn't count).
We might not have gotten blown out in the first half much (congrats on that) but it was easy to see how it changed the players for the 2nd half.
This might not be his biggest problem but its a great example of how lost he is.

UCLA basketball players say inconsistency is linked to effort on defense

quote:

It’s always interesting to hear people talk about teams that are great defensive teams, as opposed to those that are not. Defense is all about effort, passion and commitment. So why aren’t all teams great on the defensive end of the floor? After all, effort, passion and commitment should be components all teams should possess.

It’s simple. If you commit to becoming a good defensive player then you will become a good defensive player. You have to put forth the effort and have passion. There is no better example of this than Kevin Garnett, of the Boston Celtics.

To an extent, but these guys are as poorly coached as they come whether in zone or man. The press system has gone by the wayside. They have no concept of ball-you-man, don't influence the baseline and just get turned and twisted because outside of Blakeney (and TQ and Patterson when they feel like it) these guys can't guard a statue
