He may be old school but his "old school" style was good enough for the #4 total defense in the country last year. He's been consistent over the years including stopping Spurrier's "world-beating fun and gun offense" several times including 98 and 2001 and 4 out of 10 times. I like it I think it is the perfect hire for right now.

Congrats on a good hire.
Thanks...I also think it was a "good" ..solid hire. The guy will not be bolting for another job and he has proven he can coach a number of defenses to top 10 status. Is it a "great" hire?...time will tell. But I dont think there were any slam dunks out there, so Chavis is definately one of the top DCs available.
The guy was one of the first to employ zone blitzes and works wonders with linebackers. Im really looking forward to seeing Ryan Baker's progress over the next few years. I think he is all-SEC very soon.

I think some of the recruits, re: Mingo, will now have a"real" coach to work with them and get them to the next level...

Umm, he has go to be better than what we had, but does anyone remember the Florida-UT scores from the last couple of years?

The fla defense scored and they had to kick returns. I think fla's off. only scored like 21 points.

Please get Coach O to go with him. Him with Vance would be a great staff. I'm not big on Chavis but hes definitely a safe pick and adding Vance/O to the staff would be awesome
Haley is more than qualified for D-line coach as well, I'd love him but I just wonder if he'd recruit at all. We need O on defense for recruiting. I don't think Chavis recruits much and our best recruiters on D will be gone. I think they could use the, "don't you want to play under Haley because he was a All-Pro" for defensive prospects though.

Dude, we have the #1 recruiting class with the numbskulls currently employed on the defensive side. LSU recruiting will do just fine, thanks to Les.

From Wikipedia:
Chicken?
Is that your doing?

Chavis is the only Native American that is currently a Coordinator or Head Coach for a major college or NFL team.
What!?!? That's an outrage!!! There needs to be a rule change!!! There needs to be a Native American interviewed for every Coordinator or Head Coaching job!!!

IF you like Db's playing 10 to 15 yards off the WR's ...If it is 3rd and 15 and You opponents always pick up 16...Then YOU WILL LOVE CHAVIS... CHavis is/was an extension of Fulmer he plays not to LOSE...He doesn't play to win... You guys should remember that drive from 06....He had OUR SLOWEST lb on Early I believe... We scored and went ahead against UCLA and he goes into that SOFT PREVENT and made Kevin Craft look like a 1st round draft choice... He is ONE DIMENSIONAL... If he has a PRO BOWL CALIBER front seven he brings pressure... You will never hear an opposing coach say at halftime...Chavis is giving us some looks we haven't seen before... Like I said he is an extension of FULMER so if goes to LSU and doesn't play the bend but don't break defense then He will be OK.. But if he does what I think he will.... You will be cussing the db's coach and Chavis too... Don't like his style... and there was always talk of him turning down NFL jobs to stay at UT...Funny I didn't see any NFL team make him an offer... PLUS HE WILL NOT/DOES NOT RECRUIT...

There will always be people unhappy with coaching at every school. Hell we had people bitching about Bo last year.

Like i said..The drive in 06 MADE Ja Marcus Russell look like the next Doug Williams... Ever game every qb we faced had his CAREER DAY.... Chavis defenses are HARD TO RUN ON...but when it comes to the passing game... He gives up WAY TO BIG A CUSHION...

JRuss did that to many defenses not just yours. He torched pretty much everybody but Florida and Auburn that year.
