After reading the curly comments, I’m trying to remember did Joe Dean do anything positive while being the AD?

Was not responsible for hiring Skip Bertman.
We won a lot of track titles.
He hired 3 fabulous football coaches before the chancellor finally had to step in on Saban.

Basically no. As bad as Alleva was he was a dramatically, hilariously better AD than Dean.

Curly Hallman was a disgrace of a hire

He kept the Athletic Department in the black. Prior to arriving, it was in the red. He ran it like a 50s-60s business, low investment in human capital to keep costs down. He kept Skip and continued to allow the investment in baseball, only bc Skip showed him how it could generate revenue.

It is amazing the lack of research they did on Curly.
I have some Southern Miss fans that are friends and they told me at the time that the offensive coordinator, Jeff Bower, was the one responsible for the development of Favre and the team's success. This showed with his long, successful run as the head coach after he succeeded Curly. They were glad to get rid of Curly, mainly because they knew that Bower would be hired by another program very soon and they would be hard pressed to find someone as good as him and how bad Curly was would show up after he left.
