When Joe Alleva arrived from Duke, it was widely assumed he would know how to make a quality basketball hire, Duke being an elite program. Does anyone else worry about his ability to make a decent hire? I don't think he has proven he can. Neither T Johnson or N Caldwell are doing much (and though it is Caldwell's first year, the talent level is still better than the record, especially for the enormous salary he paid her.) Then there was the embarrassing coaching hire for softball when the guy accepted, held a press conference, then bolted back to Bama. Of course, only time will tell how the eventual softball hire will go.

It would terrify me if Alleva had to make a head football coaching hire in the future, given his track record here. What do you guys think?

I think he needs to stop writing letters and spend more time evaluating talent and keeping a short list of coaching replacements for each of the major sports updated.

He would have neither first nor final say in who replaces Miles.

Why the hell would you think that? Duke is an elite program because of a coach that was hired 18 years before Alleva became AD at Duke. Alleva had nothing to do with Duke's basketball success.

He's proven to be in over his head in hiring everyone from Men's Hoops (his forte, allegedly) to Women's Softball.

He won't be involved in any coaching search with a make-or-break vote ever again because of the Softball BS. You can book that. He embarrassed the Univeristy on that one, bigtime.

Got a nice raise out of us for flirting with the Vols. I'd have let him hit the bricks post-haste after threatening to leave.

He's a joke.

I do not have much respect for the guy after the way he handled the Duke lacrosse episode. He just threw that coach under the bus.

I don't think that and didn't say that. Read my post. I said it was assumed, not that I assumed. Many people did say that, though.

Perhaps true. Would you feel better that it would be the ones who thought Alleva was a good hire?

OK - I change my question to "Why the hell would anybody think that?". Fact of the matter is, the wheels to hire Trent Johnson were set in motion by Skip Bertman prior to LSU hiring Alleva. Certainly nobody would second guess Skip's recommendation. Fact of the matter is, if LSU were to hire a new football coach, a well paid search firm would be paid to narrow down the best candidates, the president and chancellor of the university would be heavily involved and the hire would go through the board of supervisors. The thought that the AD is completely responsible for the hire and deserving of the credit for his success or the blame for his failures is just not accurate. The AD's main function is oversee the entire athletic department and it's facilities and budget. His influence on the hiring of a football coach is overstated.
