The 5 year clock does not start until your semester starts (enrolling doesn't even start the clock). If you are enrolled and do not withdraw before your class/es start, the clock starts. He did not even enroll at LSU previously.
the only grey area might be if they back-counted him to last year's class when he enrolled in Jan. Not sure if that impacts 5 to play 4...

Definitely has a redshirt available and 5 to play 4.
However, due to already being an extra year removed from high school he could enter the draft after his true sophomore season.

Redshirting RBs is a disappearing practice nowadays. I know Ford was redshirted
barring a season ending injury, i think its pointless to RS a RB. Really, outside of QB's and maybe some OL, I don't think a program like LSU should be RS anyone. Even if all they do is contribute on ST or mop up duty. They can go pro 3 years after HS anyway. BY RS Brockers all we did was get 2 years of play from him instead of 3. Its kind of a catch 22, if a guy is really good, he'll been gone after his 4th year usually anyway.

I know this will be taken the wrong way, but do we really need/want Ford in 2013? What I mean is, some are wanting to RS Hill and/or Magee because we have too many RB's. The same 4 RB's could be back next year. We RS guys, wanting to keep them an extra year in part because we don't know who we will have 2,3,4 years from now. But we will have guys and chances are they will be as good as the guys we have now. So keeping Hill thru 2016 is just taking carries away from those guys (a couple of whom could be really special). So in 2009 we RS Ford so we could have him thru 2013. But if he's here next year, every touch he gets is a touch Hilliard or Hill or MaGee won't get. Don't get me wrong, I like Ford, he's been a great player for us, but I hope he has a good enough year to go pro after this season. If he's projected to go 4th round or higher he should go and if that's the case, what was the point of RS him in 2009 (unless he was hurt, which I don't recall).

I won't take their word for it. The Advocate doesn't know what the frick they are talking about.
most of the media does not, but it doesn't matter anyway. If its not an offical RS, it was a defacto one. He hasn't played since late 2010, not need to keep him out, even if he gets minumal carries. He can go pro after the 2013 season (2014 draft) regardless.

It doesn't seem right to me...did he actually sign with us before his legal stuff?
If we were somehow able to do that, it was a genius move....it means he had to come back to LSU or go somewhere else and sit and lose another yr of eligibility.
Posted on 8/9/12 at 10:24 am to the LSUSaint
No, he did not sign his LOI in 2011.

Even if he enrolled in school in the fall, he wasn't a part of the football team, so his eligibility doesn't start. And if he isn't even in school, how can his eligibility start in school he isn't at?
He has 5 years to play 4. It's pretty simple

Wrong! When you enroll in college your "5 to play 4" clock starts ticking...doesn't matter if you are playing a sport or not.

I don't think that's correct. Just b/c he was out of high school doesn't take away a year of eligibility. If that was the case how would guys like Weeden have ever played?

excellent point....the kid needs to get his arse back in the game and off the couch. pay your dues....learn the system and geaux from there.

I just don't see any of these guys leaving early unless they can get a 1000yd season. With six backs, neither of the juniors will get it so I believe all of them stay. Magee might just transfer knowing that he won't be anywhere above fifth barring injuries.
Unless Ware can stop running headfirst into people, or Ford stops getting taken down so easily, then I can't see them going before the fifth round. Now if Ware can manage say 750+ rushing, 250+ receiving and 10+ total tds, he probably sneaks into fourth. I mean if they can see the 4.5 speed, violent running with pass catching ability, then he has the best chance out of the three.

I am sure it has been addressed before, and in that case, I apologize before hand...
But, what is the status of his legal problems? Is he free and clear? If not, will we have to worry about that all year? Not making any judgment calls, but I just need to know how much stress medication I need to stock up before the season.

This guy and the LSU quarterback are fortunate they are LSU football players as it means they are going to be treated special. LSU does not mind recruiting ANYONE if they can play football. I wonder if they would have been recruited if the young girls that were the alleged victims were the daughters of some of the important people, powerful people or coaches at LSU. It is amazing what people will tolerate and accept if you happen to run or throw a football. These guys will soon be celebrated and adored in Baton Rouge.
didnt he get in trouble for getting oral sex from a schoolmate who wasnt of legal consenting age? i honestly dont know the story

They don't 1000 yds to get drafted in the 3-5th rounds. I don't see where either would drastically improve their status by coming back, so it will depend on where they are projected, if its lower than 5th, they run the risk of not being drafted.

technically it's the day you start as a full-time student, this is why Zach Lee is still eligible for 5 to play 4.

Your eligibility starts when you enroll in any school post high school. As long as he wasnt enrolled he didn't lose that RS year. Doesn't matter though as he wont RS anyway.
Miles has said he wasn't RSing Hill. He wouldn't be saying it if it wasn't a possibility.

Once a student enrolls FULLTIME, the 5 to play 4 clock starts ticking. This is why greyshirts only take 11 hours or less in the fall, so they still have 5 to play 4.
Edit: The clock starts ticking after attending the first day of classes after enrolling fulltime.

They went straight to the bigs in baseball without enrolling and taking classes....then went to college after baseball failure

NFL RB careers are getting shorter and shorter and draft value is rapidly decreasing. It makes more sense to come out and be a 5th round pick and earn a roster spot or even a practice squad spot than it does to come back for a senior year and share carries with a still super talented stable of underclassmen. Especially at LSU where there is not a featured back. I'd put good money on 2 out of the 3 JR's leaving and probably all 3. I'll also put good money on the Rant saying how stupid they are to do so when it happens even though it's the wise decision.
