Ja'vonte Smart is more of a combo guard than a traditional PG and that's cool

A guy I know who has been an LHSAA Referee for over 20 years said Javonte was the purest scorer he'd ever seen come out of LA.

I expect big things from him moving forward.

The best PGs these days are the combo guards really, ones that can take over and score.

People pigeonhole Tremont into the PG hole but the dude sometimes will go for 20-25 points and only 3-5 assists which is more combo guard territory. He's just that good a passer too.

Ja'Vonte will be the most improved player on next year's team I believe, he is going to absolutely light some teams up

I wouldn't say that type of guard doesn't exist anymore but in this age of three point shooting and position-less basketball "pure PGs" and "True Big Men" have much less use where the emphasis is now on spreading the floor and ball movement.

There definitely is, however, to me, having a guy who can also score is very important.

This guy is a good example of a pass first, non-scoring PG
Almost 8 assists a game, but only 9 points as well with terrible 3 point shooting.

Ja Morant is like the big time combo guard everyone is fawning over these days. That dude leads the nation in assists and is top 10 in scoring.

My cousin is a high school basketball coach in BR area and has raved about Smart since he was in 8th grade. Pretty much saying the same thing your ref buddy has said. Also said that when Scotlandville were destroying teams that they would just give him the ball and have him dribble around the court for like 2 minutes. Nobody could touch him or even stay in front of him

And look at his high school career. Went to the State Championship all 4 years, winning 3, 3x Gatorade Player of the Year, etc. I don’t know of anyone with a high school career that could rival that.

Love his attitude on the floor too. Very confident and has already shown he can be very clutch. Agreed that big things are coming from him for sure.

Not 100% true, but that's the direction basketball is headed. A few true PG's:

CP3
Rondo
Lowry (has really become one this year)
Rubio

My biggest concern is does he stay. He's played well and you know all these guys want to go to the NBA ASAP, but I think he could benefit from another year. Hopefully some agent doesn't get in his ear and convince him to do otherwise!

I think it has to do with different opinions by GM's and coaches. As well as guards can palm the ball and travel at will so a point guard skill like ball handling is less emphasized. Even the "euro step" has gone from 2 to 3 steps.

He’s very similar to a young James Harden.

Yes, Smart has been outstanding this season. He's made some clutch plays on both ends of the court.

He can really take the ball to the basket, along with being deadly from three point range.

When he learns how to change pace and clean up some of his decision making he’s going to be unstoppable. He and Emmitt are going to be the SECs best 1-2 punch next season. I don’t know if people notice this but Emmitt doesn’t miss inside of 8 feet. He’s constantly making constested shots and even showed off a turnaround jump shot from the post vs Kentucky. The near future is in great hands with these two.

He had a good matchup against those Georgia guards, our staff saw that and took advantage.

Won't always have that good a matchup, but when we do, good to know we can take advantage.
